STEPHENVILLE – The TexAnn volleyball team has matched the program's best start ever with a 3-2 win over St. Mary's Friday at the 2010 TexAnn Invitational in Stephenville.
The TexAnns improved to 6-0 to match the program's best start which was in 1999. Tarleton lost game one (25-22) before claiming games two and three (28-26 and 25-20). SMU then won game four 25-21 before the TexAnns took game the decisive game five (15-7).
Tarleton was led by Irelis Ilarraza with 17 kills while Rachel Wolf (12) and Stacie Murrah (11) also had double-digit tallies. Ilarraza had a .517 hitting percentage in the match to lead all hitters.
Jessie Hartman had 31 assists to lead the TexAnns while Danielle Barker was second with 20. Hartman also led the team with four service aces.
Shea McBrearty had 15 digs while Flynn Harrell and Hartman each had 10.
Tarleton tallied seven total blocks as Monica Hamel led the team with four thanks to two solo and two assisted blocks.
The TexAnns hit .181 as a squad in the match, including a .562 percentage in game five.
St. Mary's fell to 2-4 on the season while hitting .158 as a squad.
Kirsten Chapman led the visitors with 13 kills while Kori McCarver had 31 assists to lead the Rattlers. Stephanie Flores had 18 digs to top the team. SMU had seven total blocks in the contest.
Tarleton will return to action at 6:15 p.m. tonight against Texas-Permian Basin.
