TexAnn rally stopped short, fall to Texas Woman's in four

- Box Score

STEPHENVILLE - A questionable call in the deciding fourth set put Texas Woman's in a position to claim their second win over Tarleton State in a week.

The Pioneers (8-12, 6-5) capitalized on their opportunity and dropped Tarleton State (13-8, 7-3) in four sets, just seven days after winning in four at Denton.

With Texas Woman's leading two sets to one, the Pioneers built a slim lead in game four with an early 13-12 lead.

Tarleton took advantage of three TWU errors and kills by Breawn Waynes and Nikki McNorton to spark a 5-0 Volleyball vs Texas Woman's Gallery

run and lead 17-13.

The TexAnns maintained a three-point lead until TWU used a timeout at 21-18.

Out of the break, the teams split the next four points and Tarleton was two points away from forcing a fifth set.

After a Tarleton error and TWU kill, McNorton attempted a kill but Waynes was called for a net violation, which appeared to be after the play.

It wasn't meant to be, however, as Texas Woman's scored the next two points to claim the victory 25-23.

The fourth set was preceded by back-to-back TWU wins after Tarleton claimed game one, 25-22.

In the first set, Tarleton rallied from behind 18-20 with a late 7-2 on the strength of kills by Flynn Harrell, Katie Covell, Audra Vaello and Waynes.

Texas Woman's responded by opening the second set with a 13-6 lead.

The TexAnns stormed back with a 7-2, forcing a TWU timeout at 16-18.

Texas Woman's would not relinquish the lead, however, and claimed the match 25-22.

In the third set, TWU built an early 10-point advantage at 19-9.

With TWU at game-point and trailing by nine, Vaello served up five straight points before TWU put the game away with a kill.

Harrell led the team in kills with 13 while Stacie Murrah and Vaello recorded 10 each. Vaello led the TexAnns with a .400 kill percentage, among attackers with at least 20 attempts.

Jessie Hartman and Danielle Barker were the assist leaders with 30 and 20, respectively, while Emily Klein (14) and Katie Covell (10) were the top diggers.

Tarleton returns to action Thursday against No. 18 Angelo State at 7 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
