TexAnns claim second straight sweep

STEPHENVILLE - Tarleton (16-13, 10-7) won the second game of its current three-game home stand Saturday with a quick sweep of the Midwestern State (15-12, 7-10).

The TexAnns completed Saturday's sweep of the Mustangs in a little over an hour and put themselves a half game behind Abilene Christian in third place in the Lone Star Conference standings.

After MSU scored the first point of the match, Tarleton answered with runs of 4-0 and 9-0 with a Nikki McNorton kill in between to take an early 14-5 lead in the first set .

Tarleton landed a .583 hit percentage in the first set and cruised to an easy 25-12 win.

In the second set, Midwestern put a little more pressure on the front line.

Tarleton managed to hold a three-point lead over the first 15 points, but MSU pulled to within 14-13 after a 9-7 run. The Mustangs got to within one again at 18-17 and 19-18.

Leading by one, Harrell landed a kill that started a 6-2 run to take the second set 25-20.

In the final set, Midwestern opened play with an 8-4 run to take their first lead since 1-0 of the second set.

Tarleton tied it with a 6-2 run on the strength of kills by Stacie Murrah, Harrell, Ashley Rine and Katie Covell, as well as two MSU errors.

The teams traded leads until 15-15 when Murrah landed a kill to make it 16-15 and start a 7-3 run for the TexAnns.

Midwestern couldn't regain the lead and Tarleton won the set 25-21.

Harrell led the TexAnns with 14 kills and a .414 hit percentage, only making two attack errors, while McNorton landed 11 - marking her sixth straight game with double digit kills.

Jessie Hartman and Danielle Barker were the top passers with 23 and 16 assists, respectively while Emily Klein was the only TexAnn with double figure digs (15).

Tarleton hosts Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the home finale. It will be senior night in honor of Hartman and Breawn Waynes, the only two TexAnn seniors.
