TexAnns open season with loss to Pittsburg State

- Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – For the first time since Nov. 16, 2008, Tarleton (0-1) has a losing record.

The No. 20 TexAnns faltered in Saturday's season opener, falling to Pittsburg State 76-64 in the first round of the St. Mary's Classic.

Tarleton came out on fire, scoring the first eight points of the game on a pair of Peyton Adamson 3-pointers and a Morgan Stehling layup.

The Gorillas quickly answered with a 14-3 run to lead by three before a bucket by Lisa Parker made it a one-point game. The Parker layup started an 8-0 run to give Tarleton a 19-14 lead with 7:25 left in the first half.

Tarleton kept a slight advantage over the rest of the first half, leading by as many as five at 30-25 with just over three minutes left in the half.

Over the final minutes of the first period, PSU went on a brief 8-2 push to take a one-point lead with 27 seconds left before a pair of Shelby Adamson free throws gave Tarleton a 34-33 lead at halftime.

In the first half, the lead changed six times. In the second half, however, it changed just once.

PSU's Lizzy Jeronimus hit two of her 15 points to begin the second half, giving Pittsburg State the lead for good. Jeronimus' layup started a 9-0 PSU run to begin the new half.

After that opening run, PSU built its lead to as many as 19 points with 3:25 left in the game.

Tarleton, however, did manage to end the game on a 9-2 run.

In a sloppy game, the TexAnns committed 24 turnovers and were just 4-19 shooting from beyond the arc, including going 0-8 from deep in the second half.

The Adamson sisters led the TexAnns in scoring, as Peyton recorded 16 in her TexAnn debut and Shelby added 14 after going 10-11 from the charity stripe. Morgan Stehling also added double figures with 11.

Shelby and Shanae Lowrance led the TexAnns with nine rebounds each, while Adamson added six assists in her first game at the point guard position.

Tarleton returns to action Sunday against Fort Hays State in San Antonio at 1 p.m. A live radio broadcast can be heard on the Tarleton Athletic Radio Network, KSTV 93.1 FM and live video can be seen here.
