Perfection... Texans down Wildcats to go undefeated at home

STEPHENVILLE – The No. 20 Tarleton Texans added to the mystique of Wisdom Gym on Wednesday as they finished the 2010-11 season in their home gym with perfection after downing Abilene Christian, 82-61.

The Texans completed the season 15-0 at home and stretched their winning streak to 17 straight games as the Lone Star Conference South Division champions improved to 21-4 and 11-1 in the South Division.

Senior guard Corin Henry turned in his first double-double of his college career –at Tarleton or junior college – with a career-high 11 assists along with 25 points.

Both the men and women then cut down the nets to celebrate their championships.

“It was a great night,” Reisman said.  “Defending our home court is something we take very seriously, and to come out here and go undefeated in front of these fans is big to me, our staff, our players and our program.

“Corin had a great night, and for him to do it on Senior Night was even more special,” Reisman said. 

Henry found Donta Smith for an alley-oop just 17 seconds into the contest for the first bucket of the game before he got a fastbreak layup after a Smith steal to make it 4-0.  Henry then got a steal on the next trip down the floor and hit Smith for a layup.  Wes Dipprey had a layup at 18:28 to make it 8-0 Tarleton.

Preston Davis hit a three at 15:51 for the Wildcats for their first bucket before he added two free throws at 15:04 to cut the lead to three.  Henry then hit a three for Tarleton before Hills got a steal and a fastbreak dunk to return the lead to eight.  Eric Milam and Davis each had a free throw before Ben Warton had a layup at 13:02 to make it 13-9.

Hills traded a layup with two Davis free throws before Hills found Henry on a jumper.  The two teams traded points as the Texans led by as much as nine before ACU cut the lead to six at 6:14.  Nick Mosley then had a free throw before a Dipprey dunk and a Carrington Tankson layup made it 29-18 with 4:47 on the clock. 

Milam and Tankson traded baskets before Henry had a layup and Fabian Wilson a jumper to stretch the lead to 15 (35-20) with 1:19.  Davis had a jumper in the paint for the visitors before Henry hit a three from the corner to put Tarleton up by 16 before Vladimir Gravranic had a layup with 12 seconds left to cut the halftime lead to 38-24.

Warton got the first basket of the second half before Dipprey got a layup.  Warton had a second basket of the half before Tankson hit a three for the Texans.  After Zach Williams had a jumper, Warren Webb hit Henry in the left corner for a three.  Marcus Washington then had his own long-range shot to cut the score to 45-33 at 16:20.

Dipprey and Darrion Washington then had back-to-back layups to stretch the lead to 17 with 15:37 on the clock before Dosh Simms and a three-point play the hard way at 14:49.  Mosley added two free throws for the Texans before Davis had a layup.

Darrion Washington then had back-to-back threes for the Texans to make it a 20-point game (58-38) at 12:10. Smith had a layup before Alex Richman had a three. Dipprey and Giordan Cole traded buckets before Henry was fouled shooting a three, and the Texan senior hit all three bonus shots to make it 65-43 with 8:55 on the clock.

Simms had a three before Chris Marshall got a bucket for the Texans.  The two teams traded points and the Texans got it to a 21-point lead three more times before increase the lead to 23 when Darrion Washington had a layup at 1:11.  Warton scored the last points with 55 ticks left to make it 82-61.

Also scoring in double figures was Dipprey (12), Smith (10), Mosley (10) and Darrion Washington (10).  Dipprey led the team with seven rebounds as Tarleton outrebounded the Wildcats 30-26.

Tarleton averaged .550 from the floor (33-60), .318 from the arc (7-22) and .692 from the charity stripe (9-13).

Warton led the Wildcats with 18 points while Davis added 12.  Warton and Simms tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each.

ACU averaged .467 from the field (.467), .357 from the arc (5-14) and .636 from the line (14-22).

The Texans outscored the Wildcats 46-28 in the paint.

Tarleton will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Angelo State.  Tip-off in San Angelo is set for 7:30 p.m.
