LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The TexAnn doubles team of
Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez highlighted the weekend as Tarleton wraps up a three-day tennis tournament at New Mexico State University.
Perez and Martinez dominated the doubles field, advancing to the tournament finals where they fell in a hard fought battle to the top tandem from Abilene Christian, 9-7. On their way to the championship match, the TexAnn twosome took matches from St. Edward's (8-3) and New Mexico State (8-4).
Marina Rull and April Downing lost their first doubles match 8-1 to a duo from New Mexico State.
In the White Singles Main Draw,
Alicia Perez was the only TexAnn still competing in the championship bracket. The TexAnn junior fell, however, Saturday afternoon to Annemieke Witte from New Mexico State 7-6, 7-5.
Melanie Barnes was also alive in the championship bracket of the Crimson Singles Main Draw, but dropped her third round match to Kaysie Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian 6-3, 6-1.
In the consolation brackets, Karla Martinez battled back from a first set loss to claim a hard fought match against UTEP 5-7, 6-2, 10-3. Meanwhile,
Silvia Nieva dropped her Saturday consolation match to Northern Arizona 6-1, 6-0.
Ivana Zecevic,
Makenzie Mitchell and Downing each had two consolation matches over the final two days of the tournament, and all three suffered losses.
Zecevic fell 5-7, 6-1, 10-8 on Saturday to NAU and 8-2 to UTPB on Sunday. Mitchell lost 6-2, 6-3 to New Mexico Saturday and 6-1, 6-0 to ACU Sunday while Downing lost 6-1, 6-0 to UTPB Saturday and 8-2 to UTPB Sunday.
In consolation doubles play, Nieva and Mitchell split a pair of matches Saturday and battled through a tough loss Sunday. The TexAnn tandem defeated UTPB 8-3 Saturday and fell 8-3 to New Mexico and 8-6 to Northern Arizona in their final match Sunday.
Barnes and Zecevic also went 1-2 in consolation doubles play with a pair of 8-4 losses and an 8-4 win over UTPB. Rull and Downing split a pair of consolation matches with an 8-2 loss to New Mexico before salvaging their finale with an 8-6 win over UTPB.
The TexAnns will travel to Colorado State next weekend for a three-day tournament beginning Sept. 21.
