STEPHENVILLE – The Cameron Aggies closed out the contest with a 13-4 run en route to a 71-62 win over the Tarleton Texans Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.
It was the first time the Texans lost back-to-back games this season, after Tarleton picked up wins following its first three losses on the 2012-13 campaign. It also marks the first time the Texans dropped consecutive regular-season games since the 2009-10 season.
Tarleton dropped to 8-4 overall on the season and 2-3 in Lone Star Conference play. Cameron improved to 8-5 overall, 4-3 in league play and have now won three-straight heading into the weekend.
The first half had six ties and seven lead changes, but the Texans managed to take a two-point lead into the break, up 31-29.
The Texans shot 48.0 percent from the field, which included going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. CU shot 42.3 percent from the floor, but a predominant three-point shooting team, the Aggies made just 4-for-12 from downtown.
Brian Word (G, Sr, Baltimore, Md.) poured in a first half-high 10 points, going 4-for-5 from the field. He tallied three rebounds as well in 17 of the first half's 20 minutes.
CU had three different players score five points in the first period and the Aggies never led by more than two points in the half. Tarleton led by as many as six points when the Texans were up 12-6 with 15:23 on the clock.
A 10-2 run from the Aggies would give CU its first lead of the game at 16-15, and the teams would then go back-and-forth over the final 10 minutes. Tarleton led 31-26 with 1:57 left to play, but CU scored the final three points of the period to pull within a bucket of the Texans at the break.
With the Texans up by one point at 34-33, Tarleton posted a 7-4 run to go up 39-33 on Word's second three-pointer of the game. His bucket from downtown put the Texans up by six points with 16:30 left to play.
Tarleton would again lead by six, up 47-41 with less than 13 minutes to play, but a 7-0 run from CU helped give the Aggies the lead for the first time in the second half going up 48-47 with a little over nine minutes left to play in the contest.
After trading baskets over the next few possessions,
Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) would put the Texans back on top 53-52 at the 6:35 mark on a fast-break lay-up. CU countered though with a 4-0 run though and led 56-53 until
Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) tipped in an offensive rebound to pull the Texans back to within a point, down 56-55 with 4:45 left to play.
Guy tied the game up at 56-56 on the back-end of a pair of free throws and Word came right back to tie it at 58-58 with less than three minutes to play following a bucket from CU on its ensuing possession.
CU's Asaad Robinson hit back-to-back three-pointers in between a pair of free throws from
Chuck Guy, and it was all they needed as the Aggies did not give up its lead, closing out the game on a 13-4 run to take the nine-point win, 71-62.
Word finished the game tying his career high with 17 points for the Texans. Robinson led the Aggies with 17 points as well, going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc.
The Texans were out-rebounded for the second-consecutive game, as CU won the battle of the boards 38-27 and scoring 18 second-chance points. The Texans forced 14 turnovers and coughed up the ball just eight times on the night, but CU's 26 points off the bench made the difference in the game.
Tarleton finished shooting 45.1 percent from the field, while CU shot 48.1 percent.
The Texans will not have long to hinder on this loss as the team heads to Wichita Falls this Saturday, Jan. 12, to face the LSC-leading Midwestern State Mustangs. Tip-off between the two teams is set for 6 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the MSU campus.
