TexAnns fall to No. 11 West Texas A&M in four sets

Danielle Barker has now topped the 40-assist mark seven times this season, including three straight games, following her 41-assist effort Friday night.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State took the first set from the No. 11 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, but couldn't take any more in their four-set loss in Wisdom Gym Friday night.

This marks the first time Tarleton has lost back-to-back home games since dropping three straight in Stephenville on October 11, 13 and 15 of the 2011 season.

Tarleton fell behind by a slim 5-7 margin to open play before a kill by Jazmine Green turned the tide for the TexAnns in the opening set. Green kill was the first of three straight points to give Tarleton its first lead since 1-1.

After West Texas A&M tied the game at 10-10, Green answered the call again with a kill to start a 6-0 Tarleton run to push the TexAnn lead to 16-10.

From that point on, the teams traded possessions with only Tarleton able to string any points together. The TexAnns scored two straight on a Danielle Barker kill and a Meg Umbel and Barker block to put Tarleton up 20-13.

Other than those back-to-back TexAnn points, the teams traded points until the TexAnns claimed the opening set 25-17.

Over the next three matches, West Texas A&M took the advantage on a handful of big runs to put Tarleton in overwhelming deficits. Despite Tarleton's valiant rallies, there were no answers for a 20-12 (set two), 20-13 (set three) and 21-8 (set four) deficits.

In the first set, Tarleton out-hit West Texas A&M .286 to just .071 but over the final three matches the Lady Buffs hit .273, .208 and .289, respectively, while Tarleton mustered just a .094, .130 and .062.

Green and Stacie Murrah once again led the TexAnns in kills with 13 each while Katie Covell added 10 kills over her own. Covell added 19 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

Danielle Barker led the team with 41 assists and added 12 digs for her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. Emily Klein led the team with 24 digs while Kelsey Raglin added 20 as well. Covell and Barker were the only others with double-figure digs.

The TexAnns will look to get back in the win column with a quick turnaround as they are set to host Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Tarleton will be signing autographs after the game and the Junior Texan Club will be leading the run out onto the court prior to the contest.
