Late three-pointer lifts Aggies over Texans 53-51

Box Score LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton's Chuck Guy (G, Jr, Fort Worth) scored 20 points or more for the third straight game and for the fifth time in his past six, but it wasn't enough as Cameron drained a waning moments three-pointer to take away a win from the Texans in a 53-51 loss to the Aggies at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Okla., Wednesday night.

The win secured CU as at least the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Lone Star Conference Tournament as the Aggies improved to 16-7 overall and 12-5 in conference play. The loss dropped Tarleton to 15-8 overall and 8-7 in league play.

The Texans remain in sole possession of fourth-place in the LSC with three more games to play, beginning with league-leading Midwestern State in Stephenville this Saturday night.

Tarleton was held to just 21 points in the first half for the third time this season, but this time the Texans led going into the locker room when De'Andre Upchurch (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) drained a three-pointer from the right wing as time expired.

The Texans led 21-18 heading into the intermission, but Tarleton had to battle back throughout most of the first 20 minutes go gain that lead.

CU opened the game with a 13-6 run before Guy pulled the Texans back within one with back-to-back three-pointers, making it a 13-12 game with 12:10 left to play. CU came back with consecutive buckets to push its lead to 18-12, but Tarleton closed out the remainder of the half on a 9-0 run to take the three-point lead into the break.

The Aggies came out of the half with a 9-2 run to go up 27-23, but Tarleton countered with an 8-2 run that was capped off by Davene Carter's (F, So, Duncanville) turn-around hook-shoot in the paint to put the Texans up 31-29 with 12:45 to play in the game.

CU tied the game at 36-36 on a pair of free throws from Tim Johnson and then took a 39-36 lead with a three-pointer by Asaad Robinson at the 9:15 mark. Guy came right back though with a counter trey and tied the game at 39-39 with less than nine minutes to play in the contest.

Coleman Furst (G, Jr, Denison) poured in a lay-up at the 6:50 mark, but it was Tarleton's only field goal in nearly three minutes until Guy hit another three-pointer at the 4:01 mark that put the Texans in the lead 44-43.

CU regained the lead with a pair of free throws at the 3:20 mark and then Craig Foster made it a 47-44 game in favor of the Aggies on his two free throws with 2:12 left to play.

Brian Word (G, Sr, Baltimore, Md.) made it a one point game with his finger roll layup and 1:53 showing on the clock. CU had an empty possession on its next trip down the court and Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman called a timeout with 1:12 remaining to rally his squad.

Guy came out of the time out and drained a three-pointer at the top of the key to put the Texans on top 49-47 with 55 seconds left to play. CU's Rudy Harrell was fouled at the other end of the court with 44.9 seconds left as he went to the charity stripe. Harrell missed his first attempt but made the second to pull the Aggies within a point, down 49-48 to the Texans.

Tarleton again called a timeout with 34.4 seconds left and 25 seconds showing on the play clock. Guy was fouled with 26.1 seconds left in the game and went the free throw line where he made both attempts to extend Tarleton's lead to 51-48.

CU's Johnson had a wide-open lane to the basket on the Aggies next possession and he made it a 51-50 game with 20 seconds left to play. Word was then fouled with 18.4 left on the clock, but he misses the one-and-one opportunity giving the ball to CU on the rebound.

CU attempted a layup with nine seconds to play, but the ball was then knocked out of bounds off a Tarleton player, giving CU one last chance with 8.8 seconds to play in the game.

CU called a timeout, setting up a play for Kimric Dixon who drained a falling away three-pointer. Tarleton trailed 53-51 with just 2.1 seconds left on the clock and no timeouts and Guy's desperation half court attempt came up just shy of the rim as the clock ran out.

The Texans shot 47.7 percent from the field and that included going 7-for-11 from beyond the arc, but Tarleton was limited at the charity stripe tonight, making just two baskets in only four attempts on the night.

CU shot just 27.1 percent from the field, were just 7-for-23 from behind the arc, but the home team went 14-for-16 from the free throw line to make up the difference.

Guy finished the game with a career-high 26 points to lead all players in scoring on the evening. Furst was the next Texan in line with six points.

CU's Foster was limited to just eight points against a stout Texan defense and the Aggies were led in scoring with Johnson's 12 points. Andrew D'Thomas pulled down a game-high 10 boards on the night.

The Texans were out-rebounded 42-21 and CU tallied 19 of those rebounds on the offensive side of the board. Those 19 offensive boards accounted for 13 second-chance points for the Aggies.

Both teams came into tonight's game ranked inside the top-10 of the NCAA's first batch of regional rankings. CU ranked No. 8 in the South Central region and Tarleton followed in the No. 9 spot.

The Texans and Mustangs will square off inside Wisdom Gym on Saturday with a scheduled tip-off set for 7 p.m.
