STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton returned to action from an extended break by hosting Southern Nazarene in a Saturday afternoon tennis match in Stephenville and coming out on top 7-2.
“This was our first match back from spring break while Southern Nazarene had being playing over theirs,” said Tarleton head coach
Lance Drake. “We had to really compete and fight hard or we could have very easily ended up on the wrong side.
“Overall, I am pleased with how the girls competed today,” he added. “SNU gained little momentum from taking No. 2 doubles because our girls did a good job of turning the momentum back on our side.”
Mackenzie Mitchell and
Marina Rull were the first doubles squad completed with a quick 8-2 victory in the No. 3 match while
Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez handled their business in the No. 1 spot with an 8-3 win.
Ivana Zecevic and
Melanie Barnes dropped a hard fought 9-7 decision in the No. 2 match.
In singles play, Zecevic and Martinez finished the quickest with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 7-5 victories in the No. 4 and No. 2 spots, respectively, while Barnes was the third done after suffering a 2-6, 5-7 loss in the No. 3 match.
Rounding out the day was
Silvia Nieva (6-3, 6-3), Rull (6-1, 6-1) and Perez (5-7, 6-1, 6-4) in the No. 5, 6 and 1 matches, respectively.
Tarleton will return to action against Abilene Christian at 5 p.m. March 27 in Stephenville.
