STEPHENVILLE – After recognizing senior Karla Martinez to begin the day, Tarleton played its final home tennis match of the season and swept the visiting McMurry Warhawks 9-0.
“Senior day is always an emotional day,” said Tarleton head coach
Lance Drake. “We had a few tears, but we handled the rest quite well. I thought we played smart tennis today. It wasn't fancy, but it was solid.”
Tarleton opened the day with dominating performances in the top two doubles matches.
Alicia Perez and Martinez handled business in the No. 1 match 8-0 while
Melanie Barnes and
Ivana Zecevic followed suit with an 8-0 win in the No. 2 match. The No. 3 team of Mackenzie Mitchell and
Marina Rull played the closest match of the day but still came out on top 8-5.
In singles action, Tarleton wasted little time in disposing of the Warhawks.
Perez (6-2, 6-0), Martinez (6-0, 6-1) and Barnes (6-1, 6-1) handled business in the top three matches while Zecevic (6-0, 6-0), Rull (6-0, 6-0) and
Silvia Nieva (6-1, 6-0) rounded out the sweep in the No. 4 through 6 matches.
Tarleton will visit Midwestern State this weekend to finish the regular season and travel to Southlake for the LSC Championships next weekend.
