Box Score 2 SAN ANGELO – After beginning the 2013 volleyball season with a commanding victory over Colorado State-Pueblo, the TexAnns settled for a split on the opening day of the Angelo State Tournament after falling in game two.
Game 1: Tarleton 3, Colorado State-Pueblo 1
In the season opener, Tarleton rode the hot-hand of newcomer
Kaitlyn White to a victory in four sets against in-region opponent Colorado State-Pueblo.
White, a junior transfer from Arkansas Tech, landed a career-high 21 kills and had 14 digs for her first double-double in the purple and white. On the match, White had a hitting percentage of .450 after landing 21 kills on 40 attempts with just three errors.
In the first set, play stayed tight through the first 35 points with Tarleton holding a slim 18-17 advantage. However, three straight Thunderwolves miscues allowed Tarleton to take a 21-17 lead and eventually the game on the strength of Tarleton kills by White,
Meg Umbel and
Danielle Barker down the stretch.
Tarleton trailed over most of the second set and had a 4-0 surge late to tie the set at 24-24 before a Tarleton error and a Thunderwolves kill evened the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Tarleton once again found themselves trailing at 11-14 but back-to-back kills by White and
Stacie Murrah kick-started a 12-6 Tarleton run to give the TexAnns a 23-21 lead. Tarleton's
Jasmyne Brown and Murrah combined for a block before CSU-P sent the final point out of bounds to give the set to the TexAnns.
Tarleton dominated the deciding set – winning 25-13 – as the Thunderwolves failed to put together more than two consecutive points at any point during the set.
White led the team in kills (21) and hitting percentage (.450) and was second in digs (14) behind only
Emily Klein with 18. Barker also recorded a double-double, her first of the season, with 45 assists and 12 digs.
Game 2: Arkansas-Fort Smith 3, Tarleton 0
Tarleton rounded out the day one split Friday afternoon by getting swept by Arkansas-Fort Smith.
TexAnn errors hindered Tarleton in the second match of the day as the TexAnns had 23 hitting errors, two service errors, two receiving errors and a blocking errors compared to just the 13 total errors committed by UAFS.
With the first set tied at 19-19, a kill by Arkansas-Fort Smith gave the Lady Lions the final lead they would need to polish off the first set victory. Of the Lady Lions' final five points to claim the set, two came off kills and three off Tarleton errors.
In the second set, Tarleton was in control for most of the set – taking a 17-14 lead. However, Arkansas-Fort Smith answered with an 11-4 run over the rest of the set to go up 2-0 in the match. Of UAFS' final 11 points, five were courtesy of Tarleton errors.
In the final set, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 10-2 lead and ultimately as big as an 18-6 lead en route to a 25-14 victory to claim the sweep.
White and Barker each had a double-double once again with White leading the team in kills (12) to go along with 15 digs while Barker added 35 assists and 10 digs. Murrah (13),
Katie Covell (13) and Klein (18) also cracked double figures in digs.
As a team, Tarleton hit .120 for the match, including just .050 in the third set.
Tarleton will return to action Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Dallas Baptist before ending their time in San Angelo with a 4 p.m. match against Colorado Mesa.
