Texans Improve to 15-0 with 76-52 Win over Cameron

Tashawn Mabry scores two of his career-high 21 points against the Aggies on Saturday.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State's Tashawn Mabry paced the No. 6-ranked Texan offense with a career-high 21 points to help lead his squad to a 76-52 Lone Star Conference win over the Cameron Aggies in front of a sellout crowd Saturday night at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.

Mabry had just three points at halftime, but the junior forward sank four three-pointers in the second half to help the Texans extend its best start in school history to 15-0 overall and take sole possession of first place in the LSC with a 4-0 mark.

The victory pushed Tarleton's all-time record as a senior college to 725-724 overall, giving the Texan basketball program its first-ever winning record.

When Tarleton opened play as a senior college in 1961, the Texans dropped its first contest before picking up a victory in its second game to move to .500. A nine-game losing streak followed and the program would not see a winning record until tonight's 24-point victory.

Both teams shot exactly 45.0 percent in the first half, but Tarleton managed to take a nine-point lead into the half behind De'Andre Upchurch's 13 points. The senior guard was 4-for-5 from the field, which included a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc and a perfect 3-for-3 at the charity stripe.

The Texans led by as many as 13 points with 4:58 left to play in the first half, but Cameron closed out the half with a 9-5 run and trailed the home team 33-24.

Tarleton was nearly perfect from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes of play – going 13-for-14 at the charity stripe. The Aggies were limited to just four free throw attempts in the first half and that was the primary difference for the Texans to take the nine-point lead into the break.

Tarleton's 33-points in the first half was just the second lowest first half of the season, following a 29-point first half effort against East Central back on Nov. 30.

The Aggies would pull within eight points of the Texans early in the second half, but a 25-8 run behind the strength of Mabry's 15 points pushed Tarleton's lead to 62-37 and Cameron never recovered.

CU would pull back within 20 points of the Texans at the 4:37 mark, but Tarleton closed out the remainder of the game outscoring the Aggies 8-4 and finish with at least 75 points for the 15th consecutive game this season.

The Texans snapped a two-game losing streak to Cameron that dated back to last season and improved to 22-10 all-time against the Aggies. Tarleton has now won 18 consecutive games inside Wisdom Gym that also dates back to last season when Cameron downed the Purple and White back on Jan. 9, 2013.

Upchurch finished with 18 points as the only other Tarleton player to score in double figures, but the Texan bench came up big again on Saturday as Tarleton's reserves outscored the Aggie bench 40-14.

Defensively, the Texans held Cameron to nearly 20 points lower than its season average (71.1) and the squad out-rebounded the visiting team 32-27 as well. The Texans had just 10 turnovers on the night and forced 16 Aggie turnovers that helped lead to 15 points.

Davene Carter led the Texans with seven rebounds, while Coleman Furst and Mohammed Lee both had two steals apiece. Chuck Guy had a pair of steals, while both he and Emmanuel Andrews dished out a team-high four assists each.

The Texans shot 45.5 percent from the field and went 29-for-38 from the free throw line for a 76.3 percent effort from the charity stripe. Cameron shot 77.8 percent from the free throw line Saturday night, but had just seven attempts from the line the entire game.

The Texans will take its perfect record back on the road next week as the team travels to Canyon to face the West Texas A&M Buffs on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The two teams are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. inside First United Bank Center.
