Texan Basketball Preview: South Dakota Mines

THE GAME
The No. 9-ranked Tarleton Texans (10-0) return to Wisdom Gym this weekend for its final tune-up before Lone Star Conference play begins, hosting South Dakota Mines (5-10) in non-conference action this Saturday, Jan. 4. Tip-off between the Texans and Hardrockers is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Stephenville.
 
Covering the Game
Tarleton State Basketball will be broadcast live on KSTV (93.1 FM) throughout the season. Casey Hogan will have the call with Mike Young joining him for color commentary on mosts of the broadcasts. The games can also be found online at www.kstvfm.com for Saturday's contest.

Series Information
Saturday's contest marks the first meeting between the Texans and the Hardrockers.
 
Last Time out for Texans
The Texans hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., back on Dec. 21-22 to participate in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. Tarleton, then ranked No. 11 in the nation, came away with a 75-71 win over Central Washington before downing No. 5-ranked Western Washington 86-69.
 
The Texans shot 45.5 percent from the field and were 38.1 percent from the three-point line in its first neutral site contests this season. More impressively, the Texans shot 82.1 percent from the free throw line, making 25-of-30 free throws against CWU and going 30-for-37 from the charity stripe against WWU.
 
Despite being out-rebounded for the first time this season, Tarleton committed just 12 turnovers in its win over the Vikings, while forcing 20 WWU miscues and scoring 22 points off those turnovers.
 
Scouting the Hardrockers
South Dakota Mines is coming off a 68-63 loss to Eastern New Mexico and head into Stephenville with a 5-10 overall record. The Hardrockers, who play as an "Independent" in men's basketball and are not affiliated with a conference, have dropped six out of its last seven games. SDSMT's lone win was an 84-75 victory over Johnson and Wales, back on Dec. 31.
 
The Hardrockers, who are usually very good at home, are just 1-5 against road teams this season. SDSMT went 7-8 on the road last season and were 6-4 away from Rapid City during the 2011-12 season.
 
The Hardrockers rank inside the nation's top-100 teams in just seven statistical categories. SDSMT ranks 39th overall in free throw attempts and 29th overall in free throws made. The Hardrockers rank 71st in the nation with its .490 field goal percentage.
 
Senior forward Michael Dietz leads the Hardrockers with 14.7 points per game and follow senior Caleb Shockman follows with 11.3 points per game. Dietz also leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per game and Shockman ranks second on the team with his 5.2 boards per contest.
 
Freshman guard Erron Collins leads the squad with 37 assists and senior Lance Kilburn is behind him with 34 assists on the season. Dietz leads the team defensively with 15 steals, while Shockman's 16 blocks are a team-high as well.
 
The Hardrockers come into the contest shooting 49.0 percent from the field, 32.5 percent from downtown and 72.2 percent from the charity stripe. SDSMT is being out-rebounded by 1.2 boards to opposing teams (29.7-30.9) and are being out-scored by a little more than three points per game (73.3-76.9)
 
Texans in the NABC Poll
The Texans remained moved up two spots to No. 9 in this week's NABC Top-25 Poll. The Texans enter the top-10 teams in the nation for the first time since finishing the 2011-12 season ranked No. 9 back on Mar. 6, 2012.
 
The Texans have been ranked inside the NABC Top-25 for 74 different weeks since making its first-ever appearance in the poll back on Dec. 17, 2002. Including this week, Tarleton has had a top-15 ranking in 58 different weeks and a top-10 ranking in 42 different weeks.
 
Reisman's Hunt for 550
Head coach Lonn Reisman now has 540 career wins heading into this week's contests. Reisman, who is in his 26th season with the Texans, now needs just 10 more victories to earn his 550th career win. He would become just the 26th overall and ninth active NCAA Division II head coach to earn 550 wins. He would be the 83rd coach at both the D-1 and D-II levels to achieve the feat.
 
Reisman picked up victory No. 500 back on Jan. 21, 2012 when Tarleton defeated A&M-Commerce 78-53 in Stephenville.
 
Home Sweet Home
The Texans are on a current 15-game home winning streak that dates back to Jan. 2, 2013. The 15-game home win streak is currently tied for the fourth longest streak in school history.
 
Tarleton's longest home win streak was a 33-game win streak that began on Jan. 22, 2005 and ran through Jan. 27, 2007.
 
The Texans are now 352-64 (.846) overall inside Wisdom Gym under head coach Lonn Reisman.
 
Start me Up
Tarleton is 10-0 to start the season for the first time in school history, since becoming a senior college in 1961. The Texans have had just two 6-0 starts prior to this season and had never been 7-0.
 
Texan Basketball Nearing .500 Mark
The Texans are now just four wins shy from recording a .500 all-time record. Tarleton is 720-724 overall heading into this week's games.
 
Tarleton had an overall record of 180-498 before head coach Lonn Reisman took over, but behind Reisman's overall record of 540-226, the Texans could finally become a .500 team.
 
LSC Players of the Week
Tarleton swept last week's LSC Player of the Week honors with Chuck Guy taking Offensive POW honors and Davene Carter earning Defensive POW honors.
 
Guy was 29-for-31 from the charity stripe that week after making 6-of-6 free throws in the final minutes and securing wins against both McMurry and Central Washington. He was a perfect 13-for-13 at the stripe against Western Washington.
 
Carter averaged 4.0 rebounds and had three blocks in three wins for the Texans this week. Carter was influential in the Texans downing No. 5-ranked Western Washington on Sunday, pouring in 20 points, pulling down seven boards and blocking two shots.
 
Reisman Radio Show begins next week
The Coach Lonn Reisman Radio Show will air for the first time this season next Friday, Jan. 10 at Bruner Motors in Stephenville. The show, which will be broadcast live on KSTV 93.1 FM in Stephenivlle, will begin at noon.
 
Up next for the Texans
Following the Holiday break, the Texans will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 4, with a non-conference home game against South Dakota Mines. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the Texans and the Hardrockers. Tip-off will be set for 7 p.m.
