Â
LAST TIME OUT
Tarleton won its third straight game in blowout fashion with a 64-7 thrashing of McMurry in Abilene. Not to be outdone by the 536-yard effort of the Texan offense, the Tarleton State defense shined by forcing five turnovers and holding the McMurry offense just 239 yards of total offense.
Â
TARLETON vs ANGELO STATE
This is the 31st all-time meeting between these two rivals dating back to the inaugural game in 1965. Tarleton holds the series advantage 16-14 on the strength of 12 straight wins over the Rams since 2001.
Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
Tarleton State has won 12 straight games over Angelo State dating back to 2001. Prior to that 41-7 win for the Texans, Angelo was in control of the series by winning 14 of the first 18 meetings. Over the course of Tarleton 12-game streak against the Rams, six of the wins have come in Stephenville and the Texans are averaging 36.4 points per game in the last 12 consecutive wins.
Â
FAMILIAR FOE
The 31 all-time meetings between the two schools make this one of the most experienced rivalries in Tarleton's history as a senior college (since 1961). Tarleton has played at least 30 games against only three other teams: McMurry (39), Sul Ross (35) and Abilene Christian (35).
Â
TARLETON'S SCORING STREAK
The Texans have now scored a touchdown in 44 straight games dating back to the 2010 season. The last time a Tarleton team was held without a TD came in a 65-3 loss to Abilene Christian back on Sept. 25, 2010. Tarleton has scored at least a field goal or touchdown in 52 straight games heading into Saturday's game. The Texans have not been shutout since Nov. 8, 2008.
Â
WHAT A CATCH
With five receptions against Eastern New Mexico, Rhodes broke a 44-year old school record. Tarleton Hall of Fame member Harlan Wunsch, who played from 1967-69, held the record for the previous four decades with 188 career receptions.
Â
NEW LEADER IN RECEIVING YARDS
With 82 receiving yards in last week's win against McMurry,
Clifton Rhodes III broke his second career record by passing Devin Guinn (2006-09) for the honor of all-time receiving yardage leader in Tarleton history. His 82 yards against McMurry gave him 2,615 yards in his career to pass Guinn's 2,613.
Â
RECORD TRACKER: CLIFTON RHODES III
Clifton Rhodes III is on pace to become one of the best wide receivers to ever don the purple and white. Entering Saturday's game, here is where he stands on his way to Tarleton history:
• With nine career 100-yard receiving games under his belt, Rhodes is two 100-yard receiving games away from passing Devin Guinn (10) for the all-time lead.
• With 21 career touchdown receptions, he is currently third all-time in Tarleton history after passing Will Moody (2000-03) with a 55-yard touchdown catch last week. He is currently behind Jeremy Madkins (2003-06) with 25 and Devin Guinn (2006-09) with 26.
Â
RECORD TRACKER: BLAKE BARNES
In just his junior season,
Blake Barnes is making a case to go down alongside Tarleton Hall of Famer J.W. Boren as two of the top kickers in Tarleton history.
• FG Att: Barnes now has attempted 52 field goals in his career to move into second-place all-time by passing Paul Williams (2004-06) with 47. He is 32 attempts shy of passing Boren (83) for the all-time lead.
• FG Made: Entering Saturday's game with 38 career field goals, he is three makes away from passing Williams for second all-time (40). Barnes is 22 field goals away from becoming the all-time leader and passing Boren (59).
• PAT Att: He is also in second-place all-time in PATs attempted (116), after passing Paul Williams (94) during his run of 11-11 PATs against Kingsville on Oct. 11. He is 33 extra points away from the all-time record, held by Boren (148)
• PAT Made: In PATs made, Barnes is second all-time with 115 and is 22 extra points away from passing Boren (136) as the all-time leader.
Â
THE HALF-CENTURY MARK
Tarleton State has scored 50 points in three straight games for the third time in school history and first time since Oct. 6-20, 2001. The only other time came when Tarleton was a Junior College in 1919. The Texans have never topped 50 in four straight games.
Â
MEMORABLE OPPONENT FOR FOWLER
It was against Angelo State in 2010 that
Cary Fowler earned his first career head coaching victory. The Texans were down 14 but outscored the Rams 17-0 in the fourth quarter for the 37-34 win. It was also the night dedicated to Zach Shaver, as the late Texans' parents were on hand to receive Shaver's 2009 LSC Championship ring.
Â
DUAL THREAT QBs
Collin Strahan and Kyle Washington have combined for 4,519 yards of offense (3,411 pass/1,108 rush). That is more total yards than the nation's leader in total team offense - Colorado Mines (4,296).
