ABILENE – For the seventh time this season, the No. 26-ranked Tarleton TexAnn tennis team completed a clean sweep of their opponent en route to a victory – this time it was a 9-0 win on the road at McMurry Thursday afternoon.
"Well it wasn't pretty, but they got it done," said Tarleton head coach
Lance Drake. "We weren't as sharp as we needed to be, but that's also to be expected after a long lay-off. Marina (Rull) played probably the best match of the day.
"We had our moments and we had our mental lapses," he continued. "But it was good to get this match in and we'll have to do better tomorrow because we'll get a tough challenge against a good St. Mary's team."
Tarleton got off to a strong start, beginning with an 8-1 win from
Alicia Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell in the No. 2 doubles match, taking the No. 1 doubles game 8-4 behind the strong play of
Luiza Adas and
Ivana Zecevic and wrapping up with an 8-6 win from
Melanie Barnes and
Silvia Nieva in the No. 3 match.
Fresh off the doubles sweep, Rull kept the good times going with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 match. Rull and Adas, who won the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-4, were the only two TexAnns who didn't need a seventh point to win a set.
Zecevic (6-2, 7-5) and Nieva (6-1, 7-5) needed to win by two in their second sets and pulled off the victories in the No. 2 and No. 5 games, respectively, without going to a tiebreaker, while Perez and
Ellie Stevens needed extra points to decide the game.
Perez won an 8-6 tiebreaker en route to a 7-6, 6-0 victory in the No. 1 battle while Stevens won an 8-6 tiebreaker en route to a 6-1, 7-6 win in the No. 6 match to secure the sweep.
Tarleton will be back in action Friday afternoon when they visit St. Mary's in San Antonio.
