HILTON HEAD, SC – The No. 26 Tarleton State women's tennis team dominated a pair of Great Lakes Conference foes this weekend in tournament action on the east coast – defeating Tiffin 7-2 and Michigan Tech 8-1.
The tournament was originally scheduled to begin Friday, but weather cancelled Tarleton's Friday tournament debut against Ashford.
Match 1: Tarleton 7, Tiffin 2
Tarleton got off to a strong start with an advantage in doubles before taking five of the six singles matches en route to the first win of the weekend Saturday afternoon.
Melanie Barnes and
Silvia Nieva got the first win of the weekend with an 8-1 doubles win in the No. 3 spot before Tiffin evened up the set by knocking off
Alicia Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell in an 8-6 battle. Tarleton took the advantage in the doubles finale with an 8-6 win from
Ivana Zecevic and
Luiza Adas in the top-seeded match.
With Tarleton lead 2-1 after doubles,
Alicia Perez was her usual self in the No. 1 match by winning 6-1, 6-1. Her fellow senior
Melanie Barnes followed suit with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the No. 3 match.
In the No. 4 and 5 matches, Adas (6-4, 6-1) and
Marina Rull (6-1, 6-2) rolled to victories while
Silvia Nieva had to fight through a super-tiebreaker in the No. 6 match 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
Ivana Zecevic suffered the only loss in the No. 2 seed 6-7 (5-7), 0-6.
Match 2: Tarleton 8, Michigan Tech 1
In Sunday's second match of the tournament, Tarleton won in dominating fashion against Michigan Tech.
Perez and Mitchell rebounded from their match one doubles loss to defeat Michigan Tech 8-1 in the No. 2 set while Barnes and Nieva also wasted little time earning the victory with an 8-2 win in the No. 3 match. Zecevic and Adas won the top-seed match 8-4 to complete the doubles sweep.
Leading 3-0 after doubles, Perez polished off MTU's top player with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep while Adas (6-1, 6-0), Rull (6-0, 6-1), Nieva (6-2, 6-1) and
Ellie Stevens (6-0, 6-3) rolled in the No. 3-6 matches, respectively. Barnes suffered the only loss with a 3-6, 1-6 loss in the No. 2 match.
Tarleton will wrap up action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against George Mason.
