TexAnns win East Texas Invite, Texans finish third in dominating regular season finale

School records, NCAA marks abound for Tarleton in final meet before LSC Championships

Tarleton State dominated the regular season finale Saturday as the three distance runners on the west coast made a strong showing at the Long Beach Invitational while the Texan track and field team finished third and the TexAnns won the Lion Invitational.
 
For the day, Tarleton had 61 top-eight finishes, five wins, eight NCAA provisional marks and a pair of new school records including the men's mile relay who broke a 23-year old school record held by Tarleton Hall of Famers.
 
The women won the event with 151.5 points, which was 23.5 points ahead of the second place team from Texas A&M-Commerce while the men finished third with 120.5 points. The men's team were 38.5 points behind McMurry and 42.5 points ahead of UT-Tyler.
 
Distance and Relays
 
The three Tarleton distance runners in California had strong showings while in East Texas, it was the men's Mile Relay team who stole the show.
 
Lindsey Hinton and Aly Coughlin each hit NCAA provisional marks in their run of the 1500m at the Lone Beach Invitational. Hinton broke her own school record with a time of 16:52.50 while Coughlin finished in 17:04.58.
 
Rathke also hit a mark in California by finishing fourth and running the men's 800m in a time of a personal-best 1:50.60.
 
Meanwhile back in Texas, the men's Mile Relay team earned a win, its best NCAA provisional mark of the season that moved them to No. 4 in the nation and a new school record Saturday with a time of 3:09.87. The team of Michael Eschbach, Clarencio Guerrero, Gilson Umunnakwe and Cameron Krc broke the 23-year old school record of 3:10.24 held by Tarleton Hall of Fame members: Jeff Smith, Spivey Thomas, Pat Jones and Tom Green.
 
In all, there were 15 additional top-eight finishers for the men's and women's side en route to scoring points for Tarleton.
 
On the women's side, Payton Shoush finished second in the 800m with a time of 2:18.40; Tylo Farrar in third place in the 3000m Steeplechase at 11:44.94; Katelin Huckabee finished fourth in the 1500m and 5000m with times of 4:52.50 and 18:21.12, respectively; the sprint relay team of Amanda Smith, Nikki McNorton, Deylinn Garrett and Taylor Parkhill in fourth with a time of 49.07; and the mile relay team of LaDaria Nelson, Shelby Greenwalt, Jasmine Lewis and Jasmine Owens in third with a time of 3:54.16.
 
Rounding out the scoring for the men's team was Brian Cooper in the 800m with a seventh-place time of 1:57.35; Thorne Pettigrew (4:06.87) and Luke Scribner (4:08.58) in fourth and fifth place of the 1500m; James Polasek (16:00.36) and Mason Wrobel (16:22.75) in fourth and sixth place of the 5000m; the B and C squads of the mile relay in third and seventh with times of 3:15.78 and 3:26.18; and the sprint relay team in third place at 42.03.
 
Sprints and Hurdles
 
In the sprints and hurdles, Tarleton State had four NCAA provisional marks - including an improved mark by Cameron Krc in the 400m and the first mark of the season by Kyle Johnson in the 400m hurdles - to go along with a win the 110m hurdles.
 
Kyle Johnson hit his first NCAA provisional mark of the season in the 400m hurdles with a second-place time of 53.34 while Krc improved his 400m standings with a time of 47.60. Nikki McNorton also marked in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.31.
 
Randall Kadlacek earned the only win of the day by sprinters and hurdlers with a 14.65 in the short men's hurdles, which was also a provisional mark but not a season-best to improve national standings.
 
In addition to the win and marks, Tarleton had a total of 17 additional top-eight finishers which tallied points for the Texans and TexAnns.
 
On the women's side, Nelson, Owens and Greenwalt finished fourth, fifth and eighth in times of 58.06, 58.18 and 1:00.91, respectively, in the 400m; Shelby Terry (14.84), Deylinn Garrett (14.86) and Amanda Smith (16.04) finished fourth, fifth and eighth in the short hurdles; and Kara Bickham (1:03.94) and Stephanie Kornegay (1:10.06) took second and fifth in the long hurdles.
 
For the men, all of the hurdlers finished top eight including Johnson (17.36) in eighth in the short hurdles and Kadlacek (54.72), Steven Foster (56.16) and Eschbach (56.80) in the long hurdles; Brendan Williams and Umunnakwe took seventh and eighth in the 200m in 22.02 and 22.25; and Williams, Ian Dietz and Ronald Sanchez took fifth, sixth and eighth in 10.91, 10.96 and 11.07, respectively, to round out the Tarleton scorers.
 
Jumps and Throws
 
In the field events, it was a mark from Davene Carter and three victories that highlighted the afternoon for the non-runners at East Texas.
 
Carter, who has now marked in the high jump in all three meets this season, hit a mark and won the men's high jump with a leap of 6' 9'' while Nikki McNorton also won the women's high jump with a jump of 5' 3''.
 
The third field win came by Marissa Westbrook in the shot put with a launch of 41' 4.25''.
 
Outside of the wins, there were eight Texan field athletes who placed among the top eight of their events and 14 top-eight finishes by the women's side.
 
In the jump events, Travis Allison took third in the high jump with a leap of 6' 7'' while Patrick McHale (22' 1'') and Peyton Best (21' 11'') took sixth and seventh in the long jump. In the throwing events, Nic Perez (48' 11.75''), Kenny Odunaiya (48' 3.5'') and Zach Pratt (44' 7.5'') took second, third and seventh in the shot put while Ramon Lee (139' 9'') and Odunaiya (137' 9'') took sixth and eighth in the discus to round out the men's scoring.
 
On the women's side, five of the 14 scorers came in the jumping events with Shelby Terry (5' 1'') and Katy Sikes (4' 11'') claimed third and fifth in the high jump behind McNorton. Taylor Parkhill finished second in the pole vault with a leap of 10' 0'' while Terry (17' 1.5'') and Garrett (17' 0.75'') rounded out the jumpers in the long jump with fifth and sixth place finishes, respectively.
 
The women's scoring throwers included Danyelle Dillard (40' 5''), Brianna Johnson (37' 11.25'') and LeAnne Flores (36' 5'') in second, sixth and eighth place in the shot put, respectively. Westbrook (111' 4'') and Flores (83' 0'') added fourth and third place finishes in the discus and javelin, respectively.
 
All four throwers rounded out the scoring by tossing the hammer. Johnson led the way with 141' 1'' in fourth place while Dillard (114' 11''), Westbrook (112' 5'') and Flores (98' 4'') took sixth, seventh and eight place.
 
Tarleton will be off next week before returning to action May 1-3 in Kingsville for the Lone Star Conference Championships.
