SAN ANGELO – In the USTFCCCA Division II National Meet of the Week, Tarleton State made a strong showing at the ASU David Noble Relays finishing fourth in the men's and women's standings on the strength of 39 top-eight finishes, four wins, four NCAA provisional marks and a school record.
The women's team tallied 93.5 points for their fourth-place finish as the TexAnns were 41 points ahead of fifth-place McMurry and 43.5 points behind West Texas A&M for third.
On the men's side, the Texans amassed 93 points, which was 19 points ahead of McMurry and 24 points behind West Texas A&M.
Distance and Relays
Lindsey Hinton highlighted the day by earning her first NCAA provisional mark of the season en route to breaking her own school record in the 5K to lead Tarleton's 10 distance and relay scorers.
The senior from Denton's record-setting race came with a time of 17:19.18, topping her own record time of 17:25.11 which she set in 2012. The time also won the event for Hinton and earned her an NCAA mark.
Hinton wasn't the only TexAnn to win events Saturday as
Aly Coughlin and
Tylo Farrar led the way in the 1500m and 3000m Steeplechase, respectively. Coughlin won with a time of 4:41.96 while Farrar won the Steeplechase with a time of 11:56.13.
On the men's side, meanwhile,
Dylan Willett,
Chase Rathke and the men's mile relay highlighted the distance competitions with a win in the 1500m and an NCAA mark in the 800m, respectively.
Willett won the 1500m with a time of 3:58.09 while Rathke finished second but still marked with a time of 1:51.55 in the 800m. The other mark came from the men's mile relay squad of
Marquis Thompson,
Cameron Krc,
Blake Eschbach and
Clarencio Guerrero, who ran a 3:14.66 in their first race together this season.
Rounding out the point scorers for the Texans were
Robert Pereira and
Thorne Pettigrew in the 1500m run with times of 4:08.82 and 4:12.99, respectively, while three more TexAnns rounded out the scoring on the women's side.
Katelin Huckabee earned points with a third place finish in the 5000m run in 18:06.00,
Payton Shoush finished second in the 800m in 2:20.96 while the mile relay team of
Jasmine Owens,
Shelby Greenwalt, Lewis and
Kara Bickham finished sixth in 4:00.98.
Sprints and Hurdles
In the sprints and hurdles events,
Nikki McNorton highlighted the day by earning an NCAA provisional mark in the 100m Hurdles to lead the way for the Tarleton scorers.
McNorton finished third in the finals of the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.11 after qualifying in the preliminaries with a time of 14.66. Joining McNorton in the finals of the short hurdles were
Shelby Terry, who finished sixth in 14.78, and
Deylinn Garrett, who finished seventh in 14.90.
On the men's side of the short hurdles,
Randall Kadlacek and
Kyle Johnson each scored points for the Texans in the 110m hurdles with times of 15.06 and 15.28 in the finals.
Tarleton had five more TexAnns and four more Texans score points in their respective races, led by
Cameron Krc in the men's 400m run.
The sophomore sprinter finished third in the 400m run with a time of 48.13 while 400m hurdlers Kadlacek (58.66), Johnson (56.61) and Eschbach (55.39) rounded out the Texan scorers.
On the women's side, sprinters Garrett and Greenwalt earned points in the 200m run with times of 26.58 and 26.93, respectively; Owens and Greenwalt earned points in the 400m with times of 59.63 and 59.65, respectively; and Bickham rounded out the sprinting scorers with a time of 1:05.14 for a fifth place finish in the 400m hurdles final.
Jumps and Throws
Tarleton had 11 athletes rack up points in the field events led by the newest addition to the Texans
Davene Carter, who hit an NCAA mark in his first action since the dual-sport athlete joined the team after basketball.
Carter finished second in his first high jump of the season and hit his first NCAA provisional mark of the season with a leap of 6' 8.75''.
Travis Allison and
Patrick McHale also earned high jump points for the men with a fifth and sixth place finish, respectively, in leaps of 6' 4.75'' and 6' 2.75''.
On the women's side, both McNorton and Terry earned points in the high jump with leaps of 5' 4.5'' and 5' 0.5'' for finishes of third and sixth, respectively.
Kenny Odunaiya scored points in two different events for the Texans – finishing the shot put in fourth place with a launch of 50' 4'' and fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 149' 8''.
Ramon Lee rounded out the Texan point-scorers with a discus throw of 150' 4'' in fifth place.
On the women's side,
Marissa Westbrook and
Brianna Johnson scored points with top eight finishes in the shot put. Westbrook's throw of 41' 1.75'' earned her sixth place while Johnson's throw of 39' 0.5'' was enough for eighth place.
Amanda Smith rounded out the TexAnn scorers with a launch of 78' 1'' en route to a fifth-place finish.
Tarleton will send the multi-event athletes back to San Angelo Thursday and Friday for the ASU Multi while the entire Texan and TexAnn squads will head to Abilene Saturday for the ACU/Oliver Jackson Twilight.
