TexAnns take third, Texans fourth at LSC Track and Field Championships

Rathke's two golds on final day lifts Tarleton men from sixth place after day two into fourth-place finish

KINGSVILLE –
Tarleton State hit four NCAA provisional marks and Chase Rathke won the only two gold medals of the final day as Tarleton finished third in the women's standings and fourth in the men's standings at the Lone Star Conference Championships Saturday.
 
The women, who were sitting in second place after day two, finished third at the LSC Championship meet with 122.5 points while the men, who entered the final day at sixth in the standings, finished in a fourth-place tie with West Texas A&M at 122.5 points.
 
Distance and Relays
 
Chase Rathke recorded a pair of wins Saturday afternoon to bring home the only gold medals of the final day for Tarleton – winning the 800m and 1500m.
 
The distance runner from Crawford ran a 1:54.30 in the 800m finals en route to the win and followed up with a 4:01.80 in the 1500m run for his second medal of the day. His wins also accounted for 20 of Tarleton's 122.5 points.
 
Outside of the Rathke gold medals, Tarleton racked in a slew of silvers including a pair of second-place finishes from Lindsey Hinton.
 
The senior women's runner from Denton took second in the 1500m and the 5000m with times of 4:36.74 and 17:53.74, respectively. Aly Coughlin followed behind Hinton in the 5K with a third-place time of 17:55.90.
 
Dylan Willett also collected a pair of silvers by running the 1500m in 4:02.48 and the 5000m in 15:10.26. The sophomore added a fourth-place finish in the 800m finals with a time of 1:55,96.
 
The men's mile relay also earned a silver finish in the tightest race of the day.
 
The foursome of Cameron Krc, Gilson Ummunakwe, Michael Eschbach and Clarencio Guerrero finished the mile relay in an NCAA provisional mark time of 3:12.36 but were just .05 seconds off the leader.
 
Rounding out the scoring for the distance and relay events on the men's side was the sprint relay team of Robert Adkinson, Brendan Williams, Ronald Sanchez and Marquis Thompson with a seventh-place time of 41.94.
 
A trio of fifth-place finishes rounded out the scoring on the women's side, including Aly Coughlin in a 4:43.19 run in the 1500m; the sprint relay team of Amanda Smith, Nikki McNorton, Deylinn Garrett and Katie Sikes in 49.53; and the mile relay team of LaDaria Nelson, Shelby Greenwalt, Jasmine Lewis and Jasmine Owens in 3:54.33.
 
Sprints and Hurdles
 
Every one of Tarleton's sprinters and hurdlers competing Saturday recorded points for the team standings, including McNorton and Randall Kadlacek hitting NCAA marks in their respective short hurdles run.
 
McNorton topped the mark in the 100m with a run of 14.31 for a fifth-place finish while Kadlacek earned his mark with a time of 14.64 in a fifth-place run.
 
Kadlacek also earned points in the 400m Hurdles with a sixth-place run of 57.68 while his hurdling teammate, Kyle Johnson, finished sixth in the short hurdles at 14.95 and eighth in the long hurdles at 1:03.65.
 
Umunnakwe and Krc rounded out the Tarleton men's scoring in the sprints and hurdles with a fourth and fifth place finish, respectively, in times of 48.77 and 48.95.
 
On the women's side, Kara Bickham joined McNorton with a fifth-place finish, this one in the 400m hurdles, on the strength of her 1:04.75. Shelby Terry finished seventh in the short hurdles at 14.79. The 400m finalists, Nelson and Owens, also tallied points in sixth and seventh place, respectively, at 58.88 and 58.96.
 
Jumps and Throws
 
Tarleton had seven athletes produce points in the field events Saturday, including a pair of high jump NCAA marks from Davene Carter and Patrick McHale.
 
Carter finished third in the high jump with a leap of 2.06m while McHale hit the same mark on a jump-off to take fourth place and earn his first career provisional mark. Travis Allison also scored in the high jump with a leap of 1.94m and a seventh-place finish.
 
Kenny Odunaiya and Peyton Best rounded out the scoring in the men's field events as Odunaiya threw the discus 44.40m for an eighth-place finish while Best threw the javelin 53.01m for a fifth place finish.
 
On the women's side, only McNorton and Terry in the high jump scored points for the TexAnns.
 
McNorton took home a bronze, third-place medal with a leap of 1.67m while Terry cleared 1.56m for a sixth-place finish.
 
Tarleton will send a few athletes back to Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday for the TAMUC Last Chance Meet before turning its attention to the outdoor national championships.
