Tarleton set to open NCAA playoffs against Colorado Mesa tomorrow in San Angelo

THE GAME
Tarleton will make its second trip to the NCAA Playoffs this week beginning with a quarterfinal match against No. 7-seed Colorado Mesa on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in San Angelo. Tarleton enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed after winning its first Lone Star Conference Championship with a record of 27-6 and 15-1 in league play.
 
THE BROADCAST
The game will have a live radio broadcast on the Tarleton Sports Network presented by the North Texas Ford Dealers. The Voice of the TexAnns, Keltin Wiens, will serve as the play-by-play for the game. The radio broadcast can be heard on KTRL 90.5 FM in Stephenville and surrounding areas or online at tarletonsports.com/listenlive. The pregame show will begin 15 minutes before the game.
 
THE OPPONENT
Colorado Mesa, who hosted the regional tournament as the top seed, enters the 2015 NCAA Tournament as the No. 7 seed with a record of 18-11. The Mavericks have five players with over 200 kills this season, led by Caitie Breaux with 308. Defensively they are led by Taylor Woods with 511 digs on the season.
 
THE SERIES
Tarleton and Colorado Mesa have just one previous meeting in their history, which came at the Junell Center in San Angelo two seasons ago. The TexAnns fell to the Mavericks in a sweep during the season-opening Agnelo Invitational on Sept. 7, 2013.
 
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Tarleton won its first-ever NCAA Tournament game last season with a 3-0 sweep over No. 20 Metro State in the opening round.
 
BEST IN THE REGION
Hailey Roberts was named the D2CCA South Central Regional Player of the Year after leading the nation with 710 total kills and 5.77 kills per set. With 26 more kills, she will pass Sarah Butler's record of 735 kills in 1999 for the single-season Lone Star Conference record. Kenya Alexander also earned first-team recognition from D2CCA, marking her third all-region honor in her two-year Tarleton career. The senior from Fort Hood was a two-time LSC Defensive Player of the Week award winner this year and was named first-team all-LSC after helping Tarleton claim its first regular season title. She has started all 33 matches to date and has 168 blocks and 261 kills on the season. Her 168 blocks has her ranked No. 3 in the nation.
 
REWRITTING THE RECORD BOOKS
Entering the NCAA Tournament, Chandler Gow and Hailey Roberts have each set two new single-season records. Gow's 1,389 assists and 11.48 assists per set are new Tarleton records and Roberts' 1,624 attack attempts and 710 kills also top the record books.
 
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
With every win, Tarleton will continue its season in the national playoffs. With a win, Tarleton would advance to the regional semifinal.
