TexAnns fall 3-2 to Colorado Mesa in NCAA Tournament

Box Score SAN ANGELO – Tarleton's record-setting season came to an end after a 3-2 loss (17-25, 25-16, 26-24, 18-25, 13-15) to Colorado Mesa in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday.

The TexAnns went 27-7 on the year and set a new school record for wins in a season while capturing the program's first Lone Star Conference championship with a 15-1 league record.

Xzache Mathis wrapped up her senior year with a career-high 19 kills on a .325 hitting percentage.

Hailey Roberts was right behind with 18 kills to finish her sophomore campaign with 728 kills. Roberts, the D2CCA Regional Player of the Year who also set the Tarleton record for kills in a season, was eight kills short of passing Sarah Butler of West Texas A&M for the LSC record of 1,752 set back in 1999.

Chandler Gow registered 43 assists, giving the sophomore 1,432 for the season, also a new Tarleton record.

Defensively, Kenya Alexander had 10 blocks and five kills. Eight of Alexander's 10 blocks were assisted, giving the senior 142 assisted blocks on the year to tie Nikki McNorton (2011) for the single-season record.

Senior Meg Umbel had six blocks and four kills and Kelsey Raglin, also a senior, had six kills, nine digs and four blocks.

Ayssa Garcia recorded a game-high 22 digs for the TexAnns as the senior also had two aces.

The TexAnns trailed 11-6 in the opening set before going on a 4-1 run to make it 12-10. Colorado Mesa responded with a 4-0 run and eventually won the set 25-17.

Although the TexAnns trailed 7-6 early in the second set, Tarleton set the tone by going on a 9-0 run with kills from Mathis, Alexander and Raglin to build a commanding 15-7 lead. Ahead 21-16, Tarleton closed the set on a 4-0 run to even the match a 1-1.

The TexAnns went on four 3-0 runs in the first 13 points to build a 13-7 lead over the Mavericks in the third set. Colorado Mesa had a late run, however, to take a 23-22 lead. Roberts' kill gave the TexAnns a 25-24 lead and Umbel's block capped off a 4-1 run to take the third set a take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Tarleton hung with Mesa in the fourth set, although they never gained a lead. The TexAnns made it a 21-18 lead but the Mavericks ended the set on a 4-0 run and force a fifth and deciding game.

The TexAnns looked well on their way to a five-set win when leading 13-8 in the final set, but Mesa scored the final seven points to end the match.
