STEPHENVILLE – Irving Fire Department officials say former Tarleton track and field athlete Aaron Donahue is showing significant signs of improvement after being severely injured while responding to a drunken-driving crash Sunday morning.Â
Donahue suffered a traumatic brain injury after being struck by a wrong-way driver while responding to the crash. He remains in serious condition but police say his injuries are not life threatening.Â
"We are saddened to hear the news of Tarleton track and field alumnus Aaron Donahue," said Texan track and field head coach Pat Ponder in a statement. "He was an integral part of our program, completed his degree in wildlife management, and has served his community as a firefighter for the Irving Fire Dept. Administration.Â
"The Texan track and field team and our entire community is praying for a full recovery and we ask that everyone join us in keeping 'AD' in your thoughts and prayers."Â
Donahue, 30, competed as a middle distance runner for the Texans and completed his bachelor's degree in 2014. The Stephenville native has worked as an Irving firefighter since 2015.Â
Irving fire chief Victor Conley said Donahue was moved from the emergency room to the intensive care unit on Monday. Donahue has a round-the-clock nurse and is receiving visitation from family and firefighters.Â
