Box Score OGDEN – A cold shooting second half and late Weber State surge stymied Tarleton's bid to secure its second straight nonconference road victory on Saturday.
The Wildcats used an 11-0 run with under 4:30 to go to separate from the Texans and notch a 64-54 victory inside the Dee Events Center.
Tarleton led by as many as 10 points in the first half and took a 34-30 lead into halftime behind a 50 percent shooting clip (12-24) and 18-0 edge in bench points.
But the second half spun a different narrative, as the Texans went 8-31 (26 percent) from the field and had just four makes inside the arc. Tarleton maintained its lead as late as 43-40 with 3:00 left in the third quarter but Weber State used an 11-2 extended scoring spurt between the third and fourth quarters to take the lead for good.
The loss dips Tarleton's record to 5-3 while Weber State improved to 4-5.
Iyana Dorsey was Tarleton's leading scorer with 14 points off the bench. Dorsey tallied 12 of her points in the first half, including nine over the final 2:25 of the opening frame.
Seynabou Thiam and
Malaya Kendrick tallied eight rebounds apiece to lead Tarleton on the glass. Kendrick (8.1 rpg) has now snagged eight-or-more boards in five of Tarleton's eight contests. The 5-7 guard also scored seven points and dished out a team-high five assists. Thiam, who leads the WAC in blocks per game (2.3 bpg), swatted two first-half shots.
Dorsey's first-quarter outburst was a part of a 13-2 run that gave Tarleton a 21-16 advantage heading into the second period. A 3-pointer from
Jenna Dick and post up by Thiam then followed to begin the second quarter and give Tarleton its largest lead of the game at 26-16.
Tarleton maintained comfortable second quarter leads at 29-22 and 34-26, respectively, behind a long bomb from
Emily Cunningham and layup by Thiam. Weber State then began its comeback, scoring four points with less than a minute to go before the intermission and knotting the scoreboard at 38-38 with 5:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Dick's second 3-pointer of the game pulled Tarleton within two points at 53-51 with under 5:00 to go in the game but proved to be the closest the Texans would get on the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Tarleton shot 52 percent from downtown (9-17) – its second-highest clip of the season.
Emilia Axelsson drained two 3-pointers in eight second-half minutes to set a new career high in points scored. Cunningham and Dorsey each had two makes from behind the arc as well while
Tyler Jackson connected once from deep as a part of a six-point effort.
Turnovers proved costly late for Tarleton. The Wildcats transformed 15 Texan giveaways into 21 points off turnovers.
Weber State had a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint.
A quick turnaround awaits Tarleton, as the Texans host Oral Roberts at 6 p.m. on Monday inside Wisdom Gym. The contest marks Tarleton's final nonconference home game. The Texans will look to avenge a loss from the 2020-21 season, as the Golden Eagles secured a 66-56 win on Dec. 10, 2020 in Tulsa in the first meeting between the teams as Division I programs.
