Texan Basketball looks to remain undefeated in Wisdom Gym as conference play begins with a doubleheader.
Â
Women's Basketball will begin conference play against Abilene Christian Thursday night, while the men's team will face UT Arlington after the women finish up in Wisdom Gym. This is a few days prior to New Year's Eve, known as "New Year's Threeve", and will have $3 food combos at the concessions stands and 2023 glasses to giveaway to fans while supplies last. Texan Basketball will flip opponents after that, as the men will head to Abilene Christian while the women head to UT Arlington on the actual New Year's Eve on Saturday.Â

TARLETON MEN'S BASKETBALL looked better than ever in their first game back in Wisdom Gym in nearly three weeks, as they trounced Huston-Tillotson 114-56. This brings the Texans to 4-0 at home on the season for the first time in seven years, while finishing with a 58-point margin of victory, their largest margin in almost a year. Tarleton led the game for all but the first 43 seconds of the first half, quickly growing their lead to double digits after five minutes of play. The Texans' Player of the Game Lue Williams dropped a 30 piece during the game and is now the leading scorer for Tarleton this season. The other double-digit scorers were Shamir Bogues (15), KiAndre Gaddy (15) and Shakur Daniel (12). 11-of-the-12 Texans that spent time on the court came away with points of their own. Tarleton will open up their WAC play on Thursday against UT Arlington at 7 p.m., which will be game two of the doubleheader in Wisdom Gym after the women's game. Head coach Billy Gillispie made an excellent point about how the Mavericks messed up the smokestack on campus and the Texans look for payback in any way possible. The "New Year's Threeve" theme will still be going on with $3 food combos and 2023 glasses while they last. The Texans will then hit the road to Abilene Christian on Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. Tarleton's next game will be at Wisdom Gym as they host Southern Utah on Jan. 5.

TEXAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL fought hard in Puerto Rico but lost by a total of 15 points to two teams that are both top-100 in the NCAA WBB Net Ranking. Tarleton began the Puerto Rico Clasico against Ball State, a team that had won seven straight games to improve to 9-2 on the year. The Texans looked unstoppable from the beginning, going on an early 9-0 run and led 21-13 after the first quarter. Both teams went back and forth in the second frame, going into the locker room with Tarleton ahead 39-32. The Texans led by as much as 10 in the second half, but Ball State continued to fight back until taking their first lead since the game was 3-2 in the fourth quarter. Tarleton fought back to tie things up and send it to overtime, but from there the Cardinals could not miss and won 80-77. Four of Tarleton's five starters reached double figures last Monday, led by Teresa Da Silva's 19 points. Mayra Caicedo recorded 12 points, Jenna Dick finished with 11 in her first start of the year, and Nyajah Mitchels notched 10 points. Viktoria Ivanova, who came off the bench for the first time since Nov. 12, finished with 16 points. This tough loss drug on into the first quarter against Richmond last Wednesday, as the Spiders led the Texans 25-2 after the first 10 minutes. Tarleton never gave up, outscoring Richmond 41-30 over the final three quarters, but dropped the contest 55-43. Caicedo and Ivanova each led the Texans in scoring with eight points apiece. The Texans return to Wisdom Gym for their next game, where conference play begins against their I-20 rival Abilene Christian. This game will be Thursday at 5 p.m. and will be the first of the doubleheader, where the men will take the court afterwards to face UT Arlington. Wisdom Gym will celebrate "New Year's Threeve" during these games with $3 food combos at the concession stand and 2023 glasses to give out to fans while supplies last. Tarleton will make a short road trip a few days after this, as they take on UT Arlington at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Texans' next game will be Jan. 5 as they continue conference play in Phoenix against Grand Canyon.
