WEEK AT A GLANCE: Texan Tennis travels to first match day of spring semester, Wisdom Gym hosts two doubleheaders

Students begin to trickle back on campus and Wisdom Gym has plenty of action to welcome them.

Texan Basketball has a doubleheader on the perfect day for students to attend before classes begin again, with the women battling UTRGV and the men playing Chicago State Wednesday evening. Fans have a chance to let their creative juices flow, as there will be tables set up with poster boards and markers for fans to make their own posters to support the Texans. Tarleton Track & Field continues their indoor season Friday and Saturday in Lubbock at the Corky Classic. Texan Tennis begins their spring season in Norman, Oklahoma, with games against Oklahoma and the University of Missouri on Saturday. Wisdom Gym welcomes another Texan Basketball doubleheader Saturday afternoon, as the women play UT Arlington and the men tip-off against Abilene Christian. This will have a beach theme attached to it, as fans are encouraged to wear their best beach attire with purple and white leis given out while supplies last.

TEXAN WOMEN'S TENNIS starts back up after an impressive fall season, as they head to Norman, Oklahoma, on Saturday to take on Oklahoma at 2 p.m. and the University of Missouri at 5 p.m. Tarleton finished the 2022 spring season with the Western Athletic Conference Southwest Division title, as well as perfect in WAC play. They will look for redemption against Oklahoma, as they fell 0-7 to them last year. The Texans' next matches will be in Stephenville on Jan. 28 when they battle Cowley College and Weatherford College in their home opener.

TARLETON MEN'S BASKETBALL wraps up nonconference play against Chicago State in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Fans will have tables with posters and markers waiting for them to make their own creative content to support the Texans during this doubleheader. After a couple days rest they will host Abilene Christian and look for redemption against a Wildcat team they lost to on the road a couple weeks ago. This will be game two of another doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Saturday where fans are encouraged to wear their best beach attire to compliment the purple and white leis they will be given as they walk into Wisdom Gym. Once the Texans finish trying to extend their undefeated home record this week, they will be on the road at Seattle U on Jan. 19 and at California Baptist on Jan. 21. The Texans got to their 6-0 Wisdom Gym record with a 68-65 victory over Southern Utah. This was a game of runs, as Tarleton started off the game hot with a 9-2 run over the first few minutes. The Thunderbirds climbed their way back to tie the game at 24 with four minutes remaining in the first half, followed by a three-pointer to earn them their first lead of the game. The Texans took a one-point advantage to the locker room and then came out hot again with an 11-0 to start the second half. Southern Utah never stopped fighting, as they took the lead again with just 90 second left in the game. A Lue Williams put-back layup put the Texans back on top and Tarleton was perfect from the free throw line in the final minute of play to wrap up their victory. Garry Clark led the Texans in scoring with a season-high 20 points. Three other Texans finished with double-digit scoring, as Williams had 15 points, Shakur Daniel had 13 and Noah McDavid dropped 10 points. The Texans tried taking that great energy to Huntsville against Sam Houston, but a slow start proved too much in their 75-68 loss. Tarleton outscored the Bearkats by 13 points in the second half, but it was tough to bounce back from a 44-24 first half. The Texans never stopped fighting, cutting it to a single-digit lead in the final minute after being down by as much as 27 points. Shamir Bogues earned a career-high 24 points and picked up nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in the game. Javontae Hopkins was the other double-digit scorer, finishing with a season-high 16 points.

TEXAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL had a tough road trip last week, falling at Grand Canyon and New Mexico State. The Texans fell behind 11-0 over the first five minutes of the GCU game and could never find their way back, losing 70-51. Despite Tarleton forcing a season-high 28 turnovers, the Texans were outshot 26-of-47 (.533) to 16-of-50 (.320) and outrebounded 39-25. Teresa Da Silva was the only Texan to score in the first quarter and led Tarleton with 19 points throughout the game. Tarleton used a tough loss to bring great defensive energy to the beginning of their game at New Mexico State, as there were nine combined turnovers by both teams. The Texans only trailed by seven at the end of the first half, but the Aggies secured a 20-point lead in the third quarter after holding the Texans to just one point in the first six minutes. Nyajah Mitchels and Mayra Caicedo led Tarleton with 10 points apiece. The Texans are back in Wisdom Gym this week as they look for their first conference wins in the place the have a 5-1 record this season. They will be game one of the doubleheader on Wednesday, tipping off against UTRGV at 5 p.m. Poster making stations will be available for fans to help support the Texans in getting their first conference win. They will then be game one of the doubleheader on Saturday as well, as they look for redemption against UT Arlington at 2 p.m. after falling to them in Arlington. For more layups to fall, fans will be given "leiups" to match their beach attire, as these will be purple and white leis handed out while supplies last. Tarleton will be at home again on Jan. 19 as they host Sam Houston before getting back on the road to battle Utah Tech on Jan. 26.

TARLETON INDOOR TRACK & FIELD is finally back in action after their first meet at the Crimson & Gold Invitational Dec. 9-10. All of the Texans' indoor season will be done in the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center until the WAC Indoor Championships, as they head back there Jan. 26-28 and Feb. 10-11.
