Texans take quick turnaround to Albuquerque to face Lobos Sunday

ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • This is the first ever matchup between Tarleton State and New Mexico. This is the Texans' first ever game against an active Mountain West Conference opponent.
  • The Lobos advanced to the second round of the WNIT last season, finishing 21-13 overall.  
  • The Lobos have started 2-0 for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
  • UNM is 1-0 at home this year. Since the 2020-21 season, the Lobos are 34-4 (.895) at home.
  • In their season opener, UNM had 77.6 percent of their scoring come from three players.
 
QUICK HITS
  • Tarleton gave Texas Tech everything they could handle on Friday night, falling 70-63. This was the closest Tarleton State has been to knocking off a Power Five conference team, against a Texas Tech team that pounded fellow WAC program UTRGV 95-53 in this year's season opener.
  • In the second half on Friday, Tarleton State made 17-of-30 (.567) from the field, 6-of-11 (.545) from distance and 8-of-9 (.889) from the stripe. They committed just four turnovers.
  • Jakoriah Long had a team-high 13 points (4-8 FG, 4-4 FT) off the bench at Texas Tech.
  • Through two games, Tarleton is averaging 84.5 points per game, third most in the WAC. They're outshooting opponents .528 to .306 from the field and .386 to .209 from beyond the arc.
  • The Texans beat Howard Payne by 68 points on Monday, their largest season-opening win in program history with 106-38 the final. They surpassed the 2004-05 team's 67-point season-opening victory (101-34) against Hillsdale FW Baptist, a Texan group led by Ronnie Hearne.
  • Tarleton's 106 points are their most points since 114 against Texas College on Jan. 2, 2014.
  • Teresa Da Silva led the onslaught in the season opener with 23 points (8-14 FG), six steals, four assists, three rebounds and two blocks.
  • Tarleton shot 59.2 percent from the field in the season-opener, their best night shooting since March 9, 2019 at Angelo State (.618). They made 34-of-49 (.694) from inside the arc.
 
WHO'S HOT
  • Teresa Da Silva: Da Silva leads the team at 17.0 PPG, shooting 46.2 FG%, 46.2 3PT% and 100 FT%. She also has nine steals on the season, averaging 4.5 per game. She has the tied-11th most total steals in all of NCAA Division I, and is averaging the third most in the WAC.
  • Elise Turrubiates: Turrubiates has led the team in rebounding in each of the first two games, averaging 7.0 RPG on the season. In this past contest, her 25th career game at Tarleton State, the post player drained her first three for the Purple and White, finishing 2-for-2.
  • Jakoriah Long: Long just poured in a team-high 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting against Texas Tech. The Blinn College transfer averaged 8.7 PPG last season, scoring 10+ points 16 times, including a career-high 21 points in the opener against Bill Brock's McLennan CC team.
 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
  • 9: Tarleton's 106 points scored on Monday marked the ninth MOST POINTS SCORED on college basketball's opening day across all of NCAA Division I. The Texans had the sixth highest field goal percentage at .594.
  • 34: Tarleton State dished 34 assists on Monday, the MOST ASSISTS IN A GAME at the NCAA Division I level this season. Six different players had 4+ assists, led by point guard Nykesha Sanders' seven dimes.
  • 12: Of Tarleton's 15-woman roster, the Texans have three returners and 12 newcomers. Their 12 NEWCOMERS ARE TIED FOR THE MOST among all NCAA D1 programs, along with Utah State and fellow WAC program UT Arlington.
  • 6: Of Tarleton's 15-woman roster, six ARE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS, the tied-eighth most on a D1 roster this season. The Texans are represented by the United States (nine), the U.K. (two), Brazil, Montenegro, Norway and Poland.
