WASHINGTON, Utah – Tarleton not only had to battle the competition Monday-Tuesday, but also the elements, facing hail, rain and even snow in Washington, Utah. Through all of that, the Texans put together their best tournament of the 2022-23 season.
Rebeca Fernandez earned silver, finishing tied for second in the 60-woman field after 36 holes of action at +4 (73-75). The third round, which was played about halfway through for most participants, was originally suspended due to snow on Tuesday before it was ultimately canceled, with the standings called after the first two rounds. The second round Monday was suspended due to darkness with a few holes left to play and finished Tuesday morning.
Tarleton took fourth as a team at +43 (619) at Green Spring Golf Course in Washington, Utah, playing at the Utah Tech Café Zupas Trailblazer Invitational. It was the Texans' first spring tournament and they shined, posting their best result of the season.
Fernandez, a freshman, led the way with Tarleton's best individual finish of the season, surpassing
Elle Fox's tied-third finish earlier this year. Her +4 is a career-best for a tournament, besting her +6 at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic, which was played over 54 holes. She shot +1 in the first round, her second best round of the year, only behind her -1 (71) at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic.
Fernandez had a clean card in each round, finishing with the second most pars, 26 in 36 holes.
Mathilde Brogens finished in the top-five alongside Fernandez, placing tied-fifth at +6 (71-79). Her -1 (71) first round put her in second after 18 holes, as she birdied her final hole of the opening round tor the under-par effort. That marked Brogens' tied-best round of the year with her -1 (71) second round at the Harbottle Invitational. This was also Brogens' best tournament score of the year and her best finish.
Sofia Rodriguez turned in a solid tournament, shooting +13 (79-78) for tied-17th.
Elle Fox shot +20 (83-81) for 43rd place, and
Angela Inocian rounded out the group at +27 (89-82), 53rd.
California Baptist won the tournament at +34, just nine shots better than Tarleton. California State-Northridge's Gracie Piar was the medalist at -4.
Tarleton will head to Phoenix next for the GCU Invitational, hosted by the Lopes at GCU Golf Course. That tournament will take place Feb. 27-28.
