TEXAN BASEBALL was swept in their series at UTRGV, beginning with a 15-5 loss in seven innings in the series opener. The Texans gave up 14 hits and made five errors as the Vaqueros filled the base paths for most of the night. UTRGV plated two runs in the first inning, three in the third and four in the fourth before three in back-to-back innings, the sixth and seventh, to close the game out. Tarleton's first runs did not come until the fourth inning. The Vaqueros built up a 9-1 lead in the fourth inning, but the Texans answered back with three in the top of the fifth. Cole Miears and Trace Morrison each posted two hits and two RBI for the Texans in the loss. Tarleton outhit the Vaqueros in game two, but a five-run third inning for UTRGV helped give them the 6-2 victory. Three walks, a hit batter, a passed ball and a wild pitch from Tarleton helped UTRGV bring home those five runs, giving them the early 5-0 lead. Tarleton brought home its only two runs of the game in the fifth inning. Mason Crews hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Alec Williams who previously singled, making it 5-1. Hammonds came through with an RBI single through the left side of the Vaquero defense to score Grant Kerry to make it 5-2. UTRGV answered in the bottom of the fifth to up the lead to 6-2. The Texans fought hard to stave off the series sweep, but UTRGV ended game three on a walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning to win 9-8 and complete the sweep. The sixth inning presented the most action on the afternoon as the two teams combined for 11 runs. Tarleton entered the inning trailing 3-2 and left it with an 8-3 lead. The first run of the sixth inning for Tarleton came as Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo walked with the bases loaded to score Morrison and tie the game. Hammonds hit a two-run double to left field to give Tarleton the 5-3 lead before Jaime Perez launched a ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run, his second of the season. The lead was erased by UTRGV in the bottom half of the sixth, as they countered with five runs of their own, tying the game at eight. It was scoreless the next two innings before the first batter for the Vaqueros saw his fourth pitch in the ninth to end the game on the walk-off solo home run. Tarleton has a busy week in Stephenville ahead, beginning with a game against TCU at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. TARLETON SOFTBALL went 2-3 last week, beginning with a split doubleheader against Grambling State. The Texans cruised to a 10-0 mercy rule shutout victory in the first game against the Lady Tigers. Hits were hard to come by early in this game before Tarleton exploded in the fourth inning, turning a 2-0 lead into a 7-0 advantage. Katy Schaefer then hit a walk-off three-run home run in the sixth inning to end the game in run-rule fashion. Grace Garcia went the distance in her shutout victory, allowing just four hits, two walks and a hit batter across six innings, striking out five. In the fourth, the first four Texans reached, with the first run scoring on an Austin Germain RBI walk. Morgan Medford followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 Texans, then back-to-back singles made it 7-0. Tarleton outhit Grambling State 8-4 in the opener. Tarleton dropped the second game 7-6 after jumping out to a five-run lead in the first inning. The Lady Tigers scored their first run of the day in the first inning, but the Texan deficit didn't last long, as they opened their half with three straight singles, scoring two runs on Kelci Hill's to take back the lead. Kayla Wallace then scored Kiana Gibson with an RBI double to make it 3-1, followed by a Brittany Coe bases clearing three RBI double to put Tarleton up 6-1. The bats went cold for Tarleton after that, as the Texans had no hits the rest of the game and only got one on base via a walk in the fourth. Tarleton hung on to the 6-1 lead until the fifth inning when Grambling State scored three to make it a 6-4 game. The Lady Tigers plated three more in the top of the final inning to take a 7-6 lead and then sent the Texans down in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game. Tarleton began their three-game series against California Baptist in epic fashion with a no-hitter thrown by Tristan Bridges, helping the Texans win 2-0. This was the 10
th no-hitter thrown in Tarleton Softball program history and the second of the year. She allowed just three baserunners the entire game, two on hit batters and one on an error. To begin the game, Wallace singled home Hill to give the Texans a quick 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the third, Morgan Medford walked, then Germain doubled to put runners on second and third. Schaefer then hit a grounder to third, but everyone was safe as Medford beat the throw at the plate to make it 2-0 Texans. That would be the final score of the game, as Bridges kept the Lancers off the board. CBU's bats woke up in the second game of the day, going from zero hits to 18, the most Tarleton has allowed in a game all season, winning 13-2 in five innings. The Lancers scored their first run in the second inning, which Tarleton quickly matched with a triple from Wallace and a Tristyn Trull sacrifice fly. The Lancers scored two more in the third to take a 3-1 lead, then opened the fourth with a homer. This sparked CBU's eight-run fourth inning. Game three of the series was a thriller from start to finish, but three unanswered runs from CBU over the final two innings cost Tarleton the game and the series, as the Lancers won 6-5. The Texans struck first in this one when Hill ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Medford. Tarleton tacked on two more in the second on a squeeze bunt single from MacKenzie Peterson and a double steal that put the Texans on top 3-0. CBU answered with three in the third on a two-run home run and an RBI triple to reset the score at 3-3. Two innings later, Hill and Schaefer led off the inning with singles before Trull crushed a two-run double down the left field line to put the Texans back on top 5-3. Once again, the long ball helped the Lancers, as they tied the game with a two-run shot to left center. CBU plated their go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and Tarleton could not answer in the bottom. Tarleton will begin this week in Denton on Tuesday to take on North Texas at 6 p.m. This will be their second game against North Texas when the Texans hosted them and fell 6-0.
