Texans sign Norwegian guard Karyn Sanford, a transfer from UAlbany

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Texans announced on Wednesday they have added Norwegian guard Karyn Sanford, who played at the University of Albany last year.

As a freshman, Sanford (6-0) totaled 40 points and 11 rebounds in 19 games, playing 9.1 minutes per contest. She had her best game at UNLV, scoring a career-high 10 points on 2-of-4 shooting from downtown.

Sanford helped the Retrievers to a 14-2 mark in the America East Conference, where they advance to the championship in the conference tournament. Sanford and her UAlbany squad earned a WNIT berth.

Sanford hails from Bergen, Norway, where she starred while attending Metis Videregående. She competed for the European Championship, Nordic Championships, and both the U16 and U19 Norwegian Championships. During those four stretches, she totaled three MVP awards and five All-Star honors.

Playing for Norway's U16 National Team in 2017 and 2018, Sanford represented her country in the European Girls Basketball League for three seasons (2017-2020). She tallied 18 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in two games at the Eurocup Qualifiers in 2021. With the Ulriken Eagles, she averaged 16.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 2.4 steals in 21 games.

While at UAlbany, Sanford made the Dean's List. She'll major in political science at Tarleton.

Sanford is the ninth announced signing by head coach Bill Brock, joining post player Faith Acker from Winnsboro High School, guard Miannah Little from McLennan CC, stretch-four Andjela Bigovic from Cochise College, forward Lexi Bull from Wyoming, post Vitória Carvalho from South Plains College, guard Gosia Byczkowska from Howard College, guard Jakoriah Long from Blinn College, and post player Dyamon Griggs from Midwestern State.
