Depadt wins second individual spring title, propels Texan Women’s Golf to top three finish

SUGAR LAND, Texas — For the second time this spring, Louise Depadt took home the individual crown and led the Texans to a third-place team finish in their penultimate event of the regular season at the Riverbend Intercollegiate.

Depadt claimed her second individual title of the spring, and the fourth in her Texan career. She and Lou Deltombe posted top 20 performances, the third of the spring for Deltombe. The duo pushed the Texans to their second top three performance of the spring. The Purple and White placed the highest among the schools in the WAC and one stroke out of second behind Houston Christian.

"I am proud of how the team competed this week, the outcome was an overall team effort," said head coach Isabel Jimenez. "We are super excited for Louise's victory, she's got the game of a champion, and I look forward to seeing her continue play great golf for the remaining of the season."

Depadt started off strongly with a five-under, 67, round. She ended the first round at the top of the leaderboard and never looked back. She posted a pair of even-par rounds in the final 36 holes to shoot 211 to win by three strokes. Depadt led the entire field with nine birdies over the 54 holes. The title marked her second of the spring after winning the opening event of the spring at the Texas State Invitational.

Lou Deltombe was the second Texan to post a top 20 performance. Deltombe tied for 12th overall, with her third top 20 finish in the spring and her sixth on the season. The senior carded a pair of two-over, 74, rounds on her first and third 18 holes. Her best round came on the second round of day two, where she shot a one-over par, 73. She ended her fourth event of the spring with a five-over, 221.

Gina Chen improved on each round as the tournament went on to place 32nd overall. She shot an opening round of 79 before a three-over par, 75, to end the first day. The freshman closed with a one-over, 73, to  finish 11-over, 227. Natalia Fiel Ros placed 55th shooting 19-over par, 235. Fiel Ros shot a best round of 76 in her second 18 holes. Darianys Guzman shot the second-best opening round as a Texan shooting an even, 72. She withdrew from the second round and shot an eight-over, 80 in her final round.

"I want to give a big shoutout to Darianys Guzman, one of our seniors, despite of playing injured and in significant pain, she is overcoming adversity and never gives up," said Jimenez. "Her fighting spirit defines her character and raises the bar to new standards within this team, and future recruitment."

Louisville took the team title shooting an 873, nine-over par. The Cardinals won by 13 strokes over second place finisher, Houston Christian. HCU shot 886, 22-over to place a single stroke ahead of the Texans.

Depadt won the individual title by three strokes over Odessa's Napajira Luesattha who carded a two-under, 214. Austin Peay's Jillian Breedlove claimed third shooting with a one-under, 215. The three were the only golfers in the field to finish under par after 54 holes.

The Texans will have a two-week break before closing out the regular season at the Georgia State Invitational in the final two days of March in Johns Creek, Ga.
