DENTON – The Tarleton women's basketball team will travel to Denton this weekend to participate in the 2009 DFW Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere. The TexAnns will face Pittsburg State on Friday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. Tarleton will then conclude the tournament against Western New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
Tarleton (1-0) is coming off a 64-38, season-opening win against Texas-Permian Basin at Wisdom Gym on Tuesday. JoAnne Jones and Tara Towns led the TexAnns with 13 points, while Sonya Sundberg (12), Brittnie Haley (11) and Morgan Stehling (11) each poured in double-digit efforts as well. Haley recorded a double-double in her first game back after major knee surgery, as she grabbed 13 total rebounds with eight of them coming on the offensive side of the glass.
The TexAnns shot .442 (23-52) from the field on Tuesday, while allowing the Falcons to just .304 (14-46) shooting on the night. Tarleton's defense followed by it's transition offense proved to be too much for UTPB as the TexAnns scored 40 points off 36 Falcon turnovers.
The Gorillas (1-0) head into this weekend's tournament having defeated Central Oklahoma, 70-69, in Pittsburg, Kan. on Sunday. Maya Onikute led PSU with 20 points and Drew Roberts followed with 19 points. Onikute grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double, while teammate Nicole McCombs grabbed 10 boards and poured in 12 points for a double-double as well. PSU shot just .393 from the field, but managed to edge-out the Bronchos with three more made three-pointers.
The TexAnns only game against PSU came back on Nov. 19, 2004 in Pittsburg, Kan., falling 72-56 to the Gorillas.
The Mustangs (0-1) dropped their season-opener on Monday, falling 72-43 to Grand Canyon University in Silver City, N.M. Audra Major led WNMU with 12 points and 13 rebounds for a season-opening double-double.
Saturday's match-up against the Mustangs will be the first meeting between the two teams.
