STEPHENVILLE – The TexAnn women's basketball team conquered the Lady Chaparrals of Lubbock Christian Thursday night in Stephenville. The Lady Chaps entered the game ranked 20th in the nation in the NAIA polls.
Tarleton improved their record to 2-0, while Lubbock Christian fell to 2-3 on the season. The TexAnns won despite being out-shot by the Lady Chaps, who hit 58.1% of their field goals. Tarleton shot just a 39.7% from the field, but made up for it with 24 made free-throws.
The two teams stayed close throughout the game, but the TexAnns maintained their lead from the 5:14 mark in the first half on to the end. Lubbock Christian pulled within six points late in the game, with just 27 seconds remaining, but Tarleton nailed their free-throws down the stretch.
For the second straight game, Shelby Adamson led the TexAnns with 25 points, going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. The game sets a new career-high in points for Adamson, who previously scored 24 points on Jan. 16, 2010 against Angelo State. She also recorded three steals for Tarleton defensively.
Morgan Stehling added 17 points for the TexAnns, while Brianna Bledsoe scored seven points off the bench. Kiara Wright and Jenna Harris both contributed six points each to Tarleton's victorious effort.
Kelsey Benford anchored the TexAnns in the paint, grabbing eight rebounds to go with her two blocks.
“It feels amazing to pick up our second straight win before the break,” said Benford, a senior from Waxahachie. “Our team has adapted to change. With (Brittnie) Haley out and (Jenna) Harris back in, we played well with a different line-up.”
The bench played a huge role for Tarleton with multiple players in foul trouble.
“Our bench really stepped up,” said Benford. “We have a bunch of versatile players who can fill a number of roles for us. This team also has great freshmen that have played tremendously under pressure.”
Whitney Wehmeyer and Emily Atkins led the way for Lubbock Christian, scoring 16 points apiece for the Lady Chaps, while Renee Wilson grabbed 10 boards, but also had 11 turnovers.
The TexAnns will head into Thanksgiving break with a 2-0 record, before traveling to Lawton, Okla. Saturday, Nov. 27 to face the Aggies of Cameron.
