STEPHENVILLE – The No. 24 Tarleton TexAnns came an inbounds play away from defeating No. 8 West Texas A&M, but it was the Lady Buffs that came away with an 82-78 win over the TexAnns at Wisdom Gym on Saturday night.
Down 78-77 with 26 seconds remaining, WT's Holly Isaacs turned the ball over on Tarleton's side of the court – giving way for Tarleton to design a winning play. But the tables were turned on Tarleton's possession as the inbounds pass to Morgan Stehling was called a turnover as her foot touched the out-of-bounds line making the catch.
Tarleton was forced to foul, but WT put the ball in the right player's hands in Megan McLain. McLain was 7-for-7 from the charity stripe going into the next two free throw attempts. She sank both attempts that gave the Lady Buffs an 80-77 lead.
With six seconds left, Sonya Sundberg's three-point attempt was off the mark, but Brittnie Haley was there to get the rebound and when going up for an easy layup she was fouled sending her to the free-throw line. Haley made the first attempt, but missed the second and Sundberg was forced to foul. This time is was Jamie Simmons who went to the line for the Lady Buffs and she made both shots. With just two seconds remaining on the clock and down four points, it was too much for the TexAnns.
Tarleton never got off a final shot and WT heads back to Canyon, snapping Tarleton's 15-game winning streak at Wisdom Gym. The last time Tarleton fell at home before tonight was to the Lady Buffs last season back on Jan. 24, 2009.
Shelby Adamson came within a point of tying her career-high, but finished instead with a game-high 23 points. Stehling scored a career-high 22 points right behind her. Haley added 12 points for the TexAnns (19-5, 6-3 LSC).
Joni Unruh led the Lady Buffs (24-2, 8-1 LSC) with 19 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double. McLain finished with 17 points as all five WT starters poured in double-digit efforts.
Tarleton lost for the first time this season when shooting .500 percent or better from the field. The TexAnns finished the game shooting .517, but the difference was WT's .529 percentage from the field.
WT was able to come out on top large in part to scoring 23 points off of 18 TexAnn turnovers. Tarleton forced WT to 22 turnovers, but were limited to just 17 points off of them. WT made up for their offensive miscues, grabbing 13 offensive boards and scoring 15 second-chance points.
The TexAnns will not have long to dwell on this loss as Tarleton returns to action this Tuesday, Feb. 16 against Abilene Christian. The game will be played on the McMurry campus at Kimbrell Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
