SEASON-SERIES REWIND
The TexAnns held ASU to just 22 percent shooting from the floor the last time these two teams met back on Jan. 16, in Stephenville. Meanwhile, Tarleton shot 40 percent from the field, forced 21 Rambelle turnovers, out-rebounded the visiting team 40-34 and limited ASU to just 16 points in the second-half on the way to a 61-35 win.
ASU pulled to within 11 points of the TexAnns with a little over 11 minutes still to play, but Tarleton finished out the game on an 18-3 run to pull away with the 26-point victory.
The 35 points from the Rambelles was the school's lowest point total in a game in over 33 years. Stephen F. Austin held ASU to just 32 points back in 1976-77.
Shelby Adamson scored a career-high 24 points in the game and JoAnne Jones recorded her only double-double of the season scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Adamson went 8-for-8 from the field and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line as well. Mogan Stehling pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds also.
The TexAnns held ASU's Camille Perkins to just nine points on 3-of-13 shooting for the night and Lindsey Leatherman was held to just three rebounds on the evening. ASU shot 62 percent from the charity stripe in the first-half, compared with the 28 percent (2-7) it shot in the second period.
ABOUT THE TEXANNS
The TexAnns traveled to Abilene this last Tuesday to face Abilene Christian at Kimbrell Arena on the McMurry campus. The TexAnns led by as many as 14 points in the second half before a 13-2 run pulled the Wildcats back to within three points with 6:39 left to play.
The TexAnns and Wildcats would trade baskets over the next five-plus minutes, but the TexAnns still led 64-62. Tarleton missed a shot on its side of the court with 26 seconds remaining and ACU ran the floor, but their shot attempt was no good. ACU's Kelsey Darby-Holson grabbed the offensive rebound and ACU head coach Shawna Lavender quickly called a timeout with 12.3 seconds left in the game.
ACU ran its inbounds play and Jamie Meyer's jumper tied the game 64-64 with 7.6 seconds left to play. Lavender quickly called another timeout, allowing Tarleton to set up a play. Shelby Adamson took the inbounds pass all the way to the other end of the court and as soon as she was cut-off, she executed a successful bounce pass to a wide-open Brittnie Haley standing under the net. She put up the shot and it fell through as time expired giving the TexAnns a 66-64 win over the Wildcats.
Tarleton then finished the week with a compelling 91-52 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville in the TexAnns' final home game of the season. Tarleton led by 34 points at the break, limiting the Javelinas to just four field goals over the entire first 20 minutes of play.
Tarleton then had the luxury of resting most of its starters and every TexAnn came off the bench to score at least one basket.
Lisa Parker had a season-high eight points and seven rebounds, while Shedera Bowman finished the game with 10 points in just 13 minutes of action. Morgan Stehling led all players with 18 points and Shelby Adamson scored 16 points. She added a season-high seven steals as well.
HOW SWEEP IT IS
The TexAnns swept the Wildcats for just the second time in school history and first time since the 2005-06 season. Along with these two wins and the win over ACU last season, Tarleton matched its longest win streak ever over the Wildcats at three.
REGIONALLY SPEAKING
The Tarleton TexAnns moved up to No. 5 in this week's NCAA Division II South Central Region Rankings according to the poll released by the NCAA office on Wednesday.
Tarleton's move to No. 5 proved to be the only movement made in the top seven spots as West Texas A&M took the top spot in the rankings with a 22-2 in-region record. Following the Lady Buffs at No. 2 and No. 3 were Emporia State (17-3) and Washburn (19-3). Following Southeastern Oklahoma (18-6) was Central Oklahoma (16-6) at No. 7.
With a pair of losses last week, Abilene Christian fell out of the rankings and making the biggest move this week was Incarnate Word (19-5), who moved up to No. 8 this week after a No. 10 ranking last week. St. Mary's (18-7) remained at No. 9 this week, while Central Missouri (13-8) debuted in the regional rankings for the fist time this season at No. 10.
WINNING WAYS
The TexAnns' 61-35 win over Angelo State back on Jan. 16, assured Tarleton its sixth consecutive winning season - all under head coach Ronnie Hearne. Hearne and the TexAnns went 15-15 in his first season giving him seven consecutive non-losing seasons as head coach of the TexAnn basketball program.
GET DOWN AND GIVE ME TWENTY
With Tarleton's 66-64 win over ACU last Tuesday, head coach Ronnie Hearne earned his first 20-win season at the helm of the TexAnn basketball program. Hearne led the 2005-06 team to a 19-win season which had been his previous high in wins for a single-season.
GET DOWN AND GIVE ME TWENTY - PART II
The 20-win season for Tarleton is its first since the 1993-94 season. The TexAnns went 21-6 in their final season as a NAIA school. The 19-win season that coach Hearne led in 2005-06 had been the most wins for a TexAnn team since joining the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II in 1994-95.
One more win on the season would guarantee the TexAnns the most wins in a season since Tarleton tallied 30 wins back in 1991-92.
DOWNTOWN ADAMSON
Shelby Adamson is 5-of-5 from three-point range in the past three games for the TexAnns. Over the last six games she is 6-of-8 from just beyond the arc. Adamson is shooting just 25 percent from downtown on the season, but is shooting well over 40 percent in her last 11 games.
SCOUTING THE RAMBELLES
Angelo State is coming off a 69-67 loss to Midwestern State in Wichita Falls on Wednesday. The Rambelles find themselves in a “must win” situation when they face the TexAnns on Saturday.
They will also need help as well. ASU will get into the Lone Star Conference Tournament with a win over Tarleton and a loss from Texas A&M-Kingsville who plays at Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Rambelles will more than likely already know their fate before tip-off in San Angelo.
The Rambelles have lost three of its past four games
RAMBELLE LEADERS
Camille Perkins leads the Rambelles in scoring (16.0 ppg), assists (60) and steals (42). She shoots just .291 percent from beyond the arc, but does lead ASU with 30 three-pointers made. Paige Weishuhn is second on the team in scoring (11.9), but leads her sqad with 31 blocks on the season. Lindsey Leatherman leads the team in rebounds (4.9) and Weishuhn follows (4.8).
The Rambelles are shooting a conference-low .375 percent from the field. That includes a .297 percentage from beyond the arc. ASU is converting .673 percent of its shots from the charity stripe.
THE SERIES
A Tarleton win on Saturday would tie the all-time series, 18-18. The Rambelles currently hold a one-game advantage over the TexAnns despite having dropped the last two games and four of the last six meetings.
The TexAnns are just 7-12 all-time when playing in San Angelo and have lost eight straight games while visiting the Rambelles, dating back to February 2000. Tarleton is winless (0-7) when playing inside the Junell Center.
A LOOK AHEAD
The TexAnns return to the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the seventh straight season and eighth overall. The TexAnns have locked up the No. 2 seed in the South Divsion and will play the No. 3 seed in the North - either Texas Woman's or Southeastern Oklahoma. A SOSU win on Saturday guarantees the No. 3 seed for the Savage Storm, but a loss and a TWU win gives the No. 3 seed to the Pioneers.
The TexAnns and the No. 3 seed will be the first women's game played on Thursday, March 4. Tip-off is set for noon at Bruin Fieldhouse in Bartlesville, Okla.
