TexAnns look for fresh start with first LSC game

STEPHENVILLE - The young season has certainly been one to forget for Tarleton, but the TexAnns (2-5) can put their early season struggles behind them and move forward as the "real" season begins tomorrow.

Unlike the past two seasons, Tarleton has gotten off to a slow start this year losing four of its first seven games by double figures and all four to high-ranking regional foes from the MIAA and RMAC.

The other loss came at the hands of the 17th-ranked Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps.

All that can become a distant memory starting Wednesday night as the TexAnns host Cameron for the opening game of Lone Star Conference play in the first game of a doubleheader in Wisdom Gym at 6 p.m.

Cameron has won two of its three contests this season, including an 83-26 win in the season opener against Barclay College. The Aggies' one loss came in its only away game at Colorado State-Pueblo.

The Aggies have a trio of double-figure scorers, led by Julie Paunovic at 13.7 per game. Sabelle Diata (12.7) and Alexis Williams (11.3) are the others.

Diata has been a force in the paint this season, leading the Lone Star Conference in blocks with 3.3 per contest and grabbing 6.7 rebounds per game.

The TexAnns continue to be led by the LSC Preseason Player of the Year Shelby Adamson, who is leading the conference with 101 points, second in assists with 31, and ninth in assist/turnover ratio at 1.0.

The senior guard led the TexAnns in scoring in both games last week at the Clarion Inn Classic in Grand Junction, Colo. and during that trip, passed Helena Smith for eighth on the all-time scoring list with 1,233 points for a career.

Katie Crawford is currently in seventh place in scoring with 1,259.

Adamson isn't the only TexAnn moving up record books, as Morgan Stehling moved into 13th place all-time with 70 3-pointers made at Tarleton. The senior from Lorena passed Kendal Reddell and Rachel Britt and is behind current TexAnn softball coach, Julie Mata, who has 72 in her brief TexAnn career.

Tip-off for Wednesday's game against the Aggies is set for 6 p.m. and a live broadcast can be heard on KSTV 93.1 FM or at TarletonSports.com. The Tarleton men's game will immediately follow.
