Offensive explosion in overtime seals TexAnn win in Angelo

Wright's 13 boards enough to pass Franklin for 15th on all-time TexAnn rebounding list

With this overtime rebound, Kiara Wright passed Amanda Franklin for 15th on the Tarleton all-time rebounding list with 517 for her career.
Box Score SAN ANGELO – Kiara Wright's fifth double-double of the season, as well as double-figure efforts from Shanae Lowrance, Karli Moore and Peyton Adamson, lifted Tarleton to its second straight road win and a 2-0 start in conference play in a 71-61 overtime win against Angelo State (4-4, 2-1) Wednesday night.

This is just the third win in Angelo since 2000 for Tarleton (4-2, 2-0) with the last win coming Feb. 27, 2010. It is also win No. 175 in the Tarleton career of head coach Ronnie Hearne.

The TexAnns saw a double-figure lead in the second half wither away, but wasted no time putting the game out of reach in overtime.

Tarleton got on the board first in the extra period when Morgan Ashmore threaded the needle with a bounce pass to a cutting Lowrance for an easy layup.

After Wright went 1-2 from the free throw line, Adamson pushed the lead to six with a 3-ball from the left wing. Lowrance immediately recorded another bucket to force an Angelo timeout with 1:56 left and the TexAnns leading 65-57.

Adamson drained a dagger 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:22 left to put Tarleton up 68-57. Brianna Bledsoe added three free throws to bring home the win for Tarleton.

Tarleton was 4-6 shooting from the floor in overtime and 2-3 from downtown while holding Angelo to just one field goal and a free throw in the extra period.

The teams started game at an even pace, keeping the score tied over the first 6:08. At the 13:20 mark, however, Angelo struck for back-to-back buckets – one from downtown – to take a 13-8 lead.

With Angelo leading 15-10 at the 11:31 mark, Keyra Johnson and Karli Moore cut the TexAnn deficit to one with back-to-back jumpers. Tarleton kept its deficit to one until the 8:49 mark when Angelo struck for five unanswered to lead 22-16.

That run would be the last spark of offense for the Rambelles over the next 7:24 as the TexAnns held Angelo scoreless while scoring 12 unanswered – four from Moore, three from Wright and Bledsoe and two from Cheyenne Berry – to take the lead 28-22 with just over one minute to play.

The teams traded jumpers to go into halftime with a 30-24 lead.

Out of the break, Tarleton tacked on four more with a Lowrance layup and a pair of Wright free throws to push its lead to 10 at 34-24.

Angelo answered, however, with a 9-4 run of its own to cut the TexAnn lead to five. Adamson ended the Rambelle run with her first bucket of the game – a deep three from in front of the Tarleton bench.

After the Adamson 3-ball, the teams went three minutes without scoring before Keyra Johnson hit a layup to make it 43-33 Tarleton. Angelo would get no closer than six points until the 4:56 mark.

The Rambelles hit a layup with just under five minutes left to start a quick 5-1 Angelo push to cut the Tarleton lead to just 53-51 with less than four minutes left.

After Angelo tied the game with a baseline jumper at 2:49, Wright answered back with a layup of her own to retake the lead at 55-53 with 2:19 to play.

With two seconds on the shot clock, 47.8 seconds on the game clock and Ashmore inbounding under the goal, Wright was able to get a shot off and connect for one free throw to push the Tarleton lead to 56-53.

Angelo State connected for a quick layup to make it 56-55 with 34 seconds. After a failed free throw on the next Tarleton possession, Wright poked the ball away and into the arms of Berry who immediately flipped it to Adamson. She was fouled immediately.

After connecting for one free throw on the other end, Angelo hit a turnaround jumper in the paint to tie the game with 00.2 seconds left to send it to the extra period.

Wright scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds – 10 defensive. Her 13 rebounds gives her 517 for her career at Tarleton, passing Amanda Franklin for 15th place on the all-time TexAnn rebounding list.

“I actually coached Amanda Franklin her senior year and she was a 5-8 wing player, so she better pass her,” joked Hearne. “That just tells you how good of a rebounder Amanda. Kiara is a hard worker and a very talented player and there is no doubt she is going to pass a lot of people over the next two years.”

Lowrance and Moore each tallied 14 points for Tarleton while Adamson scored 12, despite having just six at the end of regulation. Moore's 14 points were a career high. Also setting a career high on the night was Ashmore with seven assists.

Tarleton shot 42 percent (27-65) from the floor and just 52 percent (13-25) from the free throw line while Angelo was 46 percent (24-52) from the floor and 59 percent (10-18) from the free throw line. The Rambelles committed 28 turnovers compared to Tarleton's 14.

The TexAnns will return home Saturday for a 5 p.m. game against Abilene Christian.
