Box Score DENTON – Kiara Wright poured in a career-high 35 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in 27 minutes to lead Tarleton's (5-1) dominating 90-60 performance against in-region foe, Regis (0-2), to wrap up the 2013 Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere Sunday afternoon.
The 35-points from Wright is a new career-high, topping the 34 she had against Texas Woman's in Stephenville last season. It is the third most points in a game for Tarleton in the NCAA era, behind only Shea Kester's 36 and Rachelle Bowen's school record 49.
With this effort, she also moved into the top 10 in Tarleton's all-time scoring list, passing Debra Howard. She now has 1,208 points in her career.
Morgan Ashmore drilled a 3-pointer five seconds into the game which was followed by a Kathy Thomas jumper and four straight points from Wright to open the game on a 9-0 Tarleton run.
Regis answered with a run of seven straight points to cut the Tarleton lead to two with 15:33 left in the opening half, but Wright and Thomas buried a layup and 3-ball on back-to-back Tarleton possessions to push the lead right back to 14-7 and begin an 11-0 Tarleton run.
The run pushed the TexAnn lead to 13 at 20-7 with 12:56 and the TexAnns cruised from there.
Regis only managed to bring the score within seven points on three different occasions – the last time coming at 8:54. Over the remainder of the first half, Tarleton outscored Regis 25-13 to take a 48-31 lead into the break.
Just six games into the young season, Tarleton is now 5-0 when leading at the break.
The TexAnns opened the new half with back-to-back layups from Wright and another 3-ball from Ashmore for a 7-0 run and a 24-point lead in the game. Tarleton built its lead to as many as 33 – the largest lead they've had in a game this season.
Wright was the only TexAnn in double-figures, attaining her 35 points on 11-16 shooting from the floor and 13-13 shooting from the free throw line. This is Wright's sixth career 30-point game.
Her 13-13 night shooting at the free throw line tied the school record for free throw percentage of 1.000 with at least 10 made attempts. She is second in school history behind Shelby Adamson's 14-14 effort in 2010 against Cameron for most free throws made in a game with a perfect percentage.
