Box Score LAWTON, Okla. – Tarleton dropped a heartbreaker on the road at Cameron Wednesday night, falling 52-50.
This loss snaps a seven-game Tarleton winning streak against the Aggies and is the first loss in the series since Dec. 10, 2005 and the first loss in Lawton since Feb. 12, 2004.
After Cameron sank the first bucket of the second half to extend its lead to a game-high six at 26-20, Tarleton was finally able to string together a run and take its first lead since the 14:41 mark of the first half.
Brianna Bledsoe scored the first two points of the second half for the TexAnns on a pair of free throws. The Bledsoe points were the beginning of an 8-1 Tarleton run to give the TexAnns the lead 28-27 with 17:19 left in the contest.
The teams traded a bucket each over the next 1:05 to keep the Tarleton lead at 30-29, but Cameron answered with an 8-0 run to retake the lead 37-30 with 11:17 left in the game.
Kiara Wright put a stop to the scoreless run with a free throw at 10:39. Off her miss on the second attempt, Bledsoe wrestled the rebound away from the Aggie defender and hit a cutting Wright for two points.
After a Bledsoe free throw made it a three-point game at 37-34,
Morgan Ashmore stripped the ball on the defensive end and answered on the offensive end with a game-tying 3-pointer from the right wing wit h 7:50 left.
A free throw by
Cheyenne Berry and layups by Wright and Bledsoe put the TexAnns up by five before Cameron immediately responded with nine unanswered points to retake the lead 46-42 with 2:30 left in the game.
Wright answered for Tarleton with back-to-back layups to tie the game yet again at 46-46.
With just over a minute left, Cameron appeared to have committed a backcourt violation when an inbound pass sailed too high for the Aggie point guard and across the line. After the no-call, Cameron went to the free throw line and hit both attempts to take a 48-46 lead.
Tarleton couldn't convert on the next offensive possession and was forced to foul. Cameron went 2-2 at the line again to extend the lead to 50-46 with 21 seconds left.
After Tarleton converted 1-2 free throws on the next possession, Cameron went to the line and hit 2-2 at the charity stripe to go up 52-47 with eight seconds left. Bledose banked in a 3-ball from the top of the key to bring the game to its final score of 52-50.
Tarleton intercepted the inbounds pass but failed to get a shot attempted in the final two seconds.
Tarleton's offensive struggles began in the first half, scoring a season-low 20 points in the opening half on just 24-percent shooting (6-25).
Cameron scored first to open the game before a 3-ball by Bledsoe and a Wright free throw put Tarleton up 4-2 early. The TexAnns pushed their lead to 7-5 before a jumper on the next Aggie possession gave Cameron a lead it would not relinquish over the rest of the first half.
In addition to the rough shooting in the opening 20 minutes, Tarleton was also losing the rebounding battle (19-20), committed more turnovers (7-6) and were being outscored in the paint (16-8) and off the bench (15-2).
For the game, Tarleton shot 30-percent from the floor on 16-53 shooting as well as 42-percent (5-12) from the 3-point line and 52-percent (13-25) from the charity stripe.
The TexAnns were outscored 22-18 in the paint and 32-2 off the bench.
Wright, the national leader in rebounds and double-doubles, recorded her 18
th of the season with a 21-point, 16-rebound effort to lead the TexAnns. Bledsoe tied her career high with 16 points. Ashmore was the next highest scorer with six.
Tarleton, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the South Central region, will return home for Pack It Purple night in Wisdom Gym to host Midwestern State, who is ranked No. 3 in the region, at 5 p.m. Saturday.
