Box Score ALLEN – Tarleton's run in the Lone Star Conference tournament came to an end Friday night with a 100-83 loss in the semifinal round against No. 1 seed, Midwestern State.
With the loss, Tarleton has now lost all three meetings of the season to Midwestern State – marking the first time since the 1992-93 season the TexAnns have lost to one team three times in a season. Tarleton fell thrice to Wayland Baptist that year.
It is also the first time Tarleton has allowed 100 points to be scored since Feb. 5, 2001.
Midwestern entered the game as the No. 1 seed in the tournament and the No. 2 seed in the South Central Region and will advance to the LSC Championship game against West Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The TexAnns will return home and await their postseason fate as the current No. 7 seed in the South Central Region. Tarleton will find out Sunday if its season will continue at the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Tarleton got the scoring started 12 seconds into the game when
Kiara Wright went to work in the paint for a layup and a 2-0 Tarleton advantage.
That was the only points Tarleton would see over the next 3:05, however, as Midwestern State scored nine unanswered points to go up 9-2 before Wright stopped the bleeding with an old-fashioned 3-point play at 16:43.
Trailing by five, Wright put home five unanswered for the TexAnns to bring the score back even at 13-13.
The teams traded buckets and slim leads until the game reached the 25-25 mark. At that point, Midwestern State pulled away for the final time with a 7-0 run to take a 32-25 lead with five minutes left in the opening half.
Over the final five minutes of the opening period, Tarleton couldn't get closer than four points and trailed by as many as eight with 32 seconds left.
Raven McGrath ended the opening half with a layup to make it a 45-39 game at the break.
Out of the break, Tarleton pulled with five after opening the half with a slim 7-6 advantage, but the Mustangs continued to push the lead – to as many as 15 with until the 3:10 mark – while Tarleton could never get closer than seven.
