Box Score WICHITA FALLS –  Last year,
Shanae Lowrance wasn't around to see the waning minutes of the game in D.L. Ligon Colliseum.
Â
Wednesday night, her offensive rebound with 46 seconds left sealed the victory for Tarleton.
Â
"I'm so proud of Shanae and I couldn't be happier for her," said Tarleton head coach Ronnie Hearne. "She's such a big part of this program and a great leader for this team. She really stepped up tonight when her team needed her."
Â
No. 14 Tarleton (13-1, 4-0) held Midwestern State scoreless over the final two minutes and went 4-4 at the free throw line to complete the 57-51 comeback victory against the Mustangs and push the winning streak to 10.
Â
The first half of Wednesday's game was certainly not one to remember for the Tarleton TexAnns.
Â
Midwestern State opened the game on a 10-0 run, the TexAnns didn't score until 4:02 into the game, two of Tarleton's three leading scorers played just a combined 10 minutes and MSU had the rebounding advantage 26-10.
Â
However, the TexAnns battled back from their early deficit and got double-figure minutes from
Raven McGrath,
Travanti Downes and
Karli Moore as Tarleton cut into the early MSU lead and kept the score at a manageable margin heading into halftime – trailing just 31-24.
Â
"Those three really gave us some good minutes off the bench in the first half," said Hearne. "You have to give credit to Raven, Karli and Travanti for coming in and playing big roles to keep the game manageable."
Â
In the opening 20 minutes, Tarleton got six points each from
Morgan Ashmore and
Brianna Bledsoe and four from
Â
Out of the break, Tarleton went on a 14-4 run over the first 3:49 to take its first lead of the game at 38-35.
Â
Midwestern State took the lead back at 14:27 with a 40-38 lead but a
Karli Moore jumper tied the game at 40-40 and the lead shifted from there until
Kiara Wright gave the TexAnns the lead back for good with a layup to make it 50-49.
Â
From the 7:00 mark to the 2:08 mark, neither team led by more than one point – primarily off a big play from Kathy Thomas. With Midwestern State having just taken the lead at 47-46, Thomas turned the ball over on the offensive end but chased down the MSU ball-handler and took it right back to keep the Mustangs from taking a three-point lead.
Â
With Tarleton holding onto a 50-49 lead, a Wright free throw at 2:08 made it a 51-49 game before Lowrance stepped to the charity stripe and knocked down a pair of her own to extend the lead to four.
Â
MSU hit a jumper on its next trip down the floor, but on Tarleton's next possession, Lowrance grabbed the game-sealing rebound and flipped it to
Brianna Bledsoe, who was fouled and hit a pair of free throws. Ashmore added two more free throws with eight seconds to bring the game to its final score.
Â
For the game, Tarleton shot just 35.4 percent from the floor on 17-48 shooting but held the Mustangs to 32 percent on 19-59 shooting. Tarleton was also 36 percent from downtown and 68 percent from the charity stripe.
Â
Wright, after her six-minute first half, played all 20 minutes of the second half and finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season and eighth in nine career meetings against the Mustangs.
Â
The senior center also moved into Tarleton history by becoming the third TexAnn in history and first in the NCAA era to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
Â
Bledsoe finished with 14 points while Lowrance had seven points and five boards. Ashmore added eight and McGrath had seven while Downes (3), Moore (3) and Thomas (2) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.
Â
Tarleton will return home Saturday for a 5 p.m. tip-off against Cameron in Wisdom Gym.
