Tarleton gets back in win column with 72-55 victory over A&M-Kingsville

Wright becomes school's all-time NCAA scoring leader after passing former teammate Adamson on all-time list

Kiara Wright is the new all-time scoring leader in Tarleton's 19-year NCAA history.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE – On a historic night for Tarleton center Kiara Wright, the No. 25 Tarleton TexAnns got back in the win column behind a 16-point scoring effort off the bench by Raven McGrath with a 72-55 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday.

The night was highlighted by Wright, a 6-0 senior All-American from Pittsburg, becoming the school's all-time NCAA scoring leader by passing her former teammate Shelby Adamson for fourth on the all-time list and overtaking the No. 1 spot among NCAA-era TexAnns.

"It's such a great accomplishment for Kiara, considering whose record she broke," said Tarleton head coach Ronnie Hearne. "Shelby was a great player, maybe one of the best I have ever coached. I know that right now, Kiara is more concerned with the fact that we won the game but it will mean a lot to her in the years to come when she can look back on this night."

Wright and Adamson were teammates at Tarleton during Wright's freshman and sophomore season and the tandem led Tarleton to the school's first-ever Lone Star Conference Championship in 2011-12.

"It really means of lot because Shelby was the reason I came to Tarleton," said Wright. "She is such a great player, a great competitor and she played with so much passion that this record really is such an honor."

For the game, however, Tarleton (17-6, 8-5) relied on double-figure scoring efforts from four TexAnns – including 12 from Wright – to rally past the Javelinas.

Tarleton trailed from the get-go, falling behind by six four minutes into the game, but a 3-pointer by Kathy Thomas started an 8-0 push by the TexAnns to erase the deficit and take a two-point lead. After that, neither team was able to pull away but a Karli Moore layup with 28 seconds left sent Tarleton into halftime with the lead at 31-29.

Out of the break, Wright scored 10 seconds into it to start a 17-4 Tarleton run that put the TexAnns up by 15 at 48-33 with 13:40 left to play.

Texas A&M-Kingsville cut the Tarleton lead to as little as seven with 9:59 to go but Meagan O'Dell, who made her first career start Saturday night, drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead back to double figures. The TexAnns wouldn't lead by less than nine the rest of the way.

McGrath's 16 points led the TexAnns, marking the third time this season McGrath has led the team in scoring off the bench, while Wright (12), O'Dell (11) and Bledsoe (10) scored double figures as well. Shanae Lowrance (8), Moore (6), Thomas (7) and Ikpeaku Iwobi (2) rounded out the scoring.

Wright also added 14 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season.

Tarleton will be at home for the final time Wednesday to host West Texas A&M at 6 p.m. The TexAnns will recognize their seniors – Wright, Bledose and Lowrance – as part of Senior Night.
