THE GAME
Fresh off a 22-point blowout of Angelo State, the Tarleton State TexAnns look to stay in the win column Saturday when they visit Texas A&M-Kingsville for a Saturday night showdown at the Gil H. Steinke Center at 6 p.m.
THE BROADCAST
The game will have a live radio broadcast presented by the Tarleton Sports Network presented by North Texas Ford Dealers. The Voice of the TexAnns, Keltin Wiens, will serve as the play-by-play for Tarleton basketball this season. The radio broadcast can be heard on KTRL 90.5 FM in Stephenville and surrounding areas or online at TarletonSports.com/ListenLive. The pregame show will begin 15 minutes prior to tip-off.
THE OPPONENT
The debut season of new head coach Wade Scott has been a struggle, to say the least. The Javelinas, as well as Salem International and San Francisco State, remain one of only three NCAA Division II teams in the nation with winless records. In the first 22 games of the season, Kingsville has only scored over 70 points one time - a 71-80 loss to St. Mary's in November. They have been held under 50 points in eight games so far, including a season-low 39 points in a 39-55 loss to Texas Woman's Wednesday night.
THE SERIES
The Tarleton-Kingsville rivalry has been around since the inaugural meeting in 1986 when the two Texas A&M system schools met in Stephen- ville on Janaury 3. Tarleton owns the all-time edge 22-18, but the series has been one-sided since the 2014 calendar year. Tarleton has won 19 of the last 21 meetings in this series with the only two losses coming by a combined five points (78-82; 61-62). The TexAnns have won 10 straight against the Javelinas dating back to Feb. 20, 2010.
STREAKING AGAINST KINGSVILLE
Tarleton State has won 10 straight games against Texas A&M-Kingsville, which is the fourth longest active streak against an NCAA- era opponent. The other streaks are 24 straight against McMurry, 16 straight against Eastern New Mexico and 11 straight against St. Edward's.
TARLETON IN THE LSC
Tarleton State has developed into one of the premier basketball programs in the nation, as well as within the Lone Star Conference. The TexAnns earned their first league championship in 2012 and reached the finals of the LSC Championship Tournament for the second time in three years last season. Since joining the LSC as an NCAA institution in 1994, the TexAnns have a record of 169-143 against conference foes, including five seasons - four consecutive - of over 10 conference wins.
MILESTONE WATCH
•
Kathy Thomas enters Saturday's game with 81 career 3-pointers made. Her solo triple against Angelo State Wednesday sent her past Tarleton Hall of Famer, Kristen Curtis for 11th all-time. She is 13 made 3's away from passing Casey Davies and tying Lisa Parker (94) for No. 9 all-time.
•With 234 career assists,
Morgan Ashmore is currently all alone for 12th all-time. She is 48 away from passing Jenn Doroga (281) for 11th all-time.
•
Raven McGrath is three (3) points from 400 points in her Tarleton career.
OUT ON THE INTERSTATE
Tarleton State is fixing to put some Texas miles on the odometer over the next six days, the TexAnns will travel almost 1,500 miles for the next two games. The estimated distance from Stephenville to Kingsville to Stephenville to Canyon and back to Stephenville is 1,455 miles.
PAK ON THE BLOCK
Tarleton State sophomore
Ikpeaku Iwobi is coming off her 18th career game with at least seven rebounds. There are six other active TexAnns with at least one career game of seven or more rebounds and all six of the other active TexAnns have a combined 19 seven-rebound games.
TOPS IN THE NATION
Tarleton State ranks among the nations best in multiple statistical categories, including:
• No. 28 in FT percentage (.759)
• No. 29 in 3-point percentage (.365)
WILSON EYES NO. 14
With her next win, Tarleton State head coach
Misty Wilson will tie Ronnie Hearne for the most wins by a TexAnn rookie head coach in the NCAA era. Hearne went 14-14 in his first season while Tammy Moorhead and Claude Cummings each when 10-16 in their rookie seasons. Only Jan Lowery in 1976-77 posted a winning record in her first season at the helm (29-10).
UP NEXT FOR TARLETON
Tarleton State will stay on the road for another long road trip Wednesday night when the TexAnns head to the other side of the Lone Star State for a 5:30 p.m. contest against No. 6 West Texas A&M at the First United Bank Center.
