HUNTSVILLE, TX – On Monday,
Sofia Rodriguez was something special. In two rounds, she scored a +3 on the day, carding 73-72 which put her tied for ninth heading into Day 2. Tuesday belonged to freshmen
Mathilde Brogens and
Bridgett Joeris, who both carded 75s as Tarleton wrapped up its second tournament of the year at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational played at Elkins Lake Country Club.
As a team, Tarleton finished 11th at +73 (925) in a two-day, 54-hole tournament. It marked a 22-stroke improvement from the Texans' first tournament this season. Rodriguez led the way at +12 overall, scoring a +9 (80) on Tuesday. She was tied for 22nd on the individual leaderboard, with the 72 matching her career-best overall score in a round (her other 72 was an "even" score in the second round of the WAC Championships last season). Brogens was the most consistent of the Texans, carding 75-78-75 for a +15, tied-30th. Joeris was at +20 with 78-80-75, tied-41st.
Angela Inocian and
Beatrice Grise rounded out the Texans' group, both shooting +34 for tied-65th, Inocian at 91-76-80 and Grise at 83-81-83.
Rodriguez's tournament couldn't have started any better, scoring a birdie on her first hole, the 15th, a 347-yard Par 4. Her first slip-up didn't come until No. 1, a bogey, that was quickly accounted for with another birdie on No. 2. She went on to have an up-and-down front nine that saw three birdies, five bogeys and only one par. Her second round was even better and much more consistent, with 12 pars total. She added three birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey to finish at +1 (72), with a -2 (34) back nine. Through six rounds this season, Rodriguez has shot under 80 four times, averaging a score of 76.7. She has carded under 80 now 11 times out of her last 15 rounds in the last five tournaments.
In her second tournament, Brogens improved by nine strokes, shooting a collegiate career-low of 75 right off the – tee. In that first round, she was able to bounce back from a less than ideal start, a double-bogey on her first hole by shooting +2 the next 17, with two birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys. After a second round score of 78, she was tied-32nd entering Day 2, where she matched her season-best round of 75, thanks to 12 pars. Par 3s were her strong suit, averaging a score of 3.08, tied-16th best in the tournament. She has now shot four straight rounds under 80, averaging a score of 77.7 so far this year.
Joeris had an 11-stroke improvement across her first two tournaments at Tarleton, scoring her collegiate career-best round on Tuesday with a 75 (+4). She boosted her spot on the leaderboard by six spots in Round 3, a round that consisted of four birdies, two bogeys and three double-bogeys. She was dominant on the Par 5s in this one, averaging the tied-2nd best score of 4.78, finishing at -2 in such holes. Of the nine Par 5s played, she had four birdies. Through two tournaments this year, Joeris has three rounds under 80, averaging a score of 79.5.
Inocian had a rough start, but she was able to shake it off the same day, improving 15 strokes round-over-round on Monday. In the second round, she had three birdies, boosting her to a 76, which matches the freshman's collegiate career-best round. Through her first two tournaments, she's averaged a score of 81.5.
Grise made her season tournament debut. She recorded three birdies in her best of the three rounds, Round 2, where she shot an 81. That score put her just three strokes short of her collegiate career-best, a round of 78 at the Prairie View A&M Invitational last season.
As a team, Tarleton was second best on the Par 5s scoreboard at an average score of 5.20 (+9 total). The Texans' next tournament is the Lady Red Wolves Classic, hosted by Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on Oct. 11-12.
