SUGAR LAND, Texas – Houston Christian's tournament on the men's side just days ago saw Tarleton post medalist honors and a top-three team result. Now this week it's the women's turn, and the Texans will be looking for similar success.
Tarleton Women's Golf is coming off of their second best tournament score to par of the season, going +32 at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix two weeks ago. They'll participate in the HCU Husky Invitational Monday and Tuesday, a 54-hole event with two rounds held the first day.
This is the second straight year Tarleton will compete in the Huskies' tournament at Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas. Last year,
Sofia Rodriguez finished tied-18th in the event.
Rodriguez is poised for another strong tournament if the last one plus last year is any indication. At the GCU Invitational, Rodriguez posted her top two rounds of the year on the first day with an even-par 72, followed by a -1, 71. She took tied-19th overall at +3 (72-71-76).
Joining Rodriguez at the HCU Husky Invitational is
Elle Fox,
Mathilde Brogens,
Rebeca Fernandez and
Alejandra Cambronero. The same five all played in Tarleton's last event, as well.
Fox turned in a tournament score of +5 (75-75-71) at the GCU Invitational for tied-32nd, boosting her spot by 15 on the leaderboard in Round 3 with her -1 effort. She's played in all 17 rounds this year for the Texans and has the best average round score on the team at 75.7.
Brogens has shot 73 or better in two of her last five rounds, Fernandez took tied-second overall just two tournaments ago, and Cambronero is coming off of two of her three best rounds of the year, ending the GCU Invitational with a pair of 76's in Rounds 2-3.
At this year's HCU Husky Invitational, Tarleton will be joined by 14 other teams. From the WAC will be UT Arlington, UTRGV and Sam Houston. The other 11 are HCU, UTEP, Illinois State, Charleston Southern, Omaha, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Bradley, Texas A&M-Commerce, Louisiana-Monroe, Appalachian State and Lamar.
