Trio nets top-20 finish and leads Texans to fourth-place finish at Bearkat Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — After a rainy open to the Bearkat Invitational, Tarleton State pushed forward in day two placing three golfers in the top-20 to finish in fourth place at Elkins Lake Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Originally scheduled to be a 54-hole tournament, a first day full of rain and lightning cut the tournament to 36 holes across two days.

Tarleton sloshed to a sixth-place finish after the first day, determined for a better showing on Tuesday, and the Texans did just that. Tarleton improved, shooting 11 strokes better as a team on day two, to jump in the standings to fourth overall, just one stroke behind third.

Lou Deltombe started the invitional with a 78, but rallied on day two, carding a plus-one, 72, to finish in a tie for 14th with teammate, Sofia Rodriguez. Rodriguez led the Texans after the first 18 holes on Monday with a 75, four-over-par. On Tuesday she continued with another 75 to finish eight-over for the tournament.

Mathilde Brogens totaled a 151 for the two-day event, to finish in a tie for 19th, her first top-20 finish this season. The trio of Deltombe, Rodriguez and Brogens all earned the Texans' first top-20 finishes this fall.

Rebeca Fernandez shot four strokes better on day two than on Monday, carding a 80-76-156 (+14) to tie for 31st. Angela Inocian rounded out the starting five for the Texans turning in 82-81-163 (+21) to finish tied for 41st.

The host, Sam Houston, took home the team title in the event running away shooting eight-over-par as a team across the two days. Stetson finished 22 strokes behind the Bearkats and UT Arlington rounded out the top three just one stroke ahead of the Texans.

Texas A&M's Blanca Fernandez Garcia-Poggio earned the individual crown shooting an even par, 71, in both rounds. Zulaikah Nassar of Sam Houston earned silver medalist honors with a two-over-par total score. Three golfers including a pair of Bearkats carded a three-over par 36-hole performance to round out the podium.

Tarleton State will have a break before its next event, a home match play on Monday, October 9. The Texans will host an event for the first time in Jimenez's time at the helm of the Texans. The match is schedule to be held at Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose, Texas and will feature a head-to-head layout. Texas Southern, Stephen F. Austin, and Prairie View A&M round out the four-team field. A pair of matchups will occur in the morning with the winners facing off in the afternoon for first place and the losers battling for third place.
