Tarleton State Track and Field adds Timothy Thompson to 2024-25 coaching staff

Thompson will reunite with head coach Bobby Carter after spending a season together at Nebraska

STEPHENVILLLE, Texas — Tarleton State Track and Field new head coach Bobby Carter has announced the addition of Timothy "Coach T" Thompson to his staff ahead of the 2024-25 season.
 
Thompson is first-year head coach Carter's first addition to his new Texan staff. Thompson will serve as the sprints coach for both the men's and women's track and field squads.
 
"We are thrilled to have Coach T join our new staff," said head coach Bobby Carter. "Over the past several  years I have seen him perfect his craft and coach/develop many great athletes. He is not only an outstanding coach, but also a great person who truly cares about the athlete's experience. He is ready to take on the task at hand and hit the ground running."
 
Thompson and Carter first crossed paths as assistant coaches as the University of Nebraska. The duo spent the 2016-17 season together with the Cornhuskers before Thompson headed to Salina, Kansas to serve as an assistant coach at Kansas Wesleyan. During his time, he helped student-athletes turn in 16 all-conference performances.
 
Following his time with the Coyotes, he spent two seasons at Arkansas State as an assistant coach. During his two seasons, he helped produce two NCAA All-Americans, seven Sun Belt Conference (SBC) champions, nine NCAA West Prelims qualifiers, 30 All-SBC performers, three A-State school record holders, one SBC all-time and championship meet record, and 13 inclusions into A-State's top-ten all-time performance lists. After serving as an assistant coach for two seasons with the Red Wolves, Thompson moved on to become a college head coach for the first time in his career.
 
Ahead of the 2020-21 season, Thompson accepted the job to be the head coach of track and field at Southwestern College. He spent a pair of seasons at the helm of the Builders program. He helped guide the men's and women's teams each to a fourth place finish at the KCAC Championships. The men's team finished 24th among 64 teams at the 2022 NAIA Championships. While at Southwestern College his men's 4x400 team finished 3rd at nationals which included David Mvundura, current Tarleton student-athlete.
 
Most recently, Thompson served as the head coach at Columbia International University. Thompson helped the women's outdoor track and field team earn the program's first-ever conference title in 2024. During the past two seasons at the helm of the program, Thompson has guided the Rams to a plethora of success on both the men's and women's teams. He has produced 15 conference champions, 20 NCAA All-Americans, 10 NAIA All-Americans, and 40 NAIA National Qualifiers. His athletes broke 32 school records three indoor conference records and three outdoor conference records. He has helped seven athletes win eight postseason athletic honors as well as 45 Scholar Athletes.

As an athlete, Thompson competed in the 110, 100 and 200 meter sprints as well as the 4x100 and 4x400 relays at the University of Texas-Arlington from 2006-09. He helped the Mavericks win the 2007 Southland Conference Championship. Individually, he earned All-Southland in the 60-meter indoor hurdles during the same season. In his final three collegiate seasons he earned all-conference honors in the 110-meter hurdles. He was an NCAA Championships qualifier in the event in his sophomore and junior seasons. He also qualified in the same years in the 4x100 relay.
 
Thompson graduated South Grand Prairie High School in 2005 ending his illustrious prep career. He was a three-time district champion in the 110-meter hurdles and won one district title in the 300 meters. Thompson qualified for regionals twice and was named to the Texas Class 5A top 10 list during his senior year. He was also involved in extracurricular activities serving as a student ambassador and a member of students gaining power.
 
Thompson a Grand Prairie, Texas, native, graduated from University of North Texas in 2014 with a bachelor of arts and sciences.
