STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Track and Field will head to a pair of meets to finish out the regular season this weekend. Majority of the squad will head to Albuquerque, NM for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Also on Friday and Saturday, the distance runners will head to the Jarvis Scott Invite in Lubbock, Texas for their final competition of the regular season.
Both events will be streamed and have live results will be provided. The Don Kirby Elite Invitational will be streamed on FloTrack (subscription required) and the Jarvis Scott will be on ESPN+. Head coach
Bobby Carter is in his first season at the helm of the Texan program. Coach Carter previously served as an assistant coach for the University of Arizona. Carter was an elite athlete himself, starring in jump at Nebraska. During his time competing from 2009-14 he earned a pair of All-American honors.
Both Tarleton State's men's and women's programs were ranked nationally by the USTFCCCA in their most recent rankings on Tuesday. The women's squad is 49
th in the nation with the men checking in at 88. In the South Central Region, the women are 17
th and the men are 10
th. In the WAC the Texan women are slotted third with the men ranked fourth.
This past week,
Sir Jonathan Sims was named WAC Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. Sims put on an outstanding performance in the long jump at the Steve Miller Invitational. Sims won the event with a 7.68-meter best jump. His mark broke the school record he set earlier this season by 0.03 meters. He also broke the Kansas State facility record while posting the best leap in the WAC this season. He ranks 21
st in the nation at 7.68 meters.
Amandine Estival also broke a school record last weekend at the Steve Miller Invitational. She broke the 200- meter record that she set the weekend before running in 24.01 seconds. Estival owns both the 200- and 400-meter indoor school records. The France native is the only runner in the WAC to rank in the top five in the conference in both the 200 and 400.
Red-shirt freshman
Victoria Cameron owns the third fastest time in the NCAA this season in the 60-meter dash. He 7.14 school and all-time WAC record is the fifth best time by a woman in the world this year.
In total, four men rank in the top 50 nationally. Sims not only ranks 21
st in the long jump but also 25
th in triple jump.
Gabriele Tosti is 13
th in the triple jump ranking within the top 16 which would qualify for indoor nationals.
Lokesh Sathyanathan is 35
th in the long jump.
After the first four weekends, 12 school records have been broken by the Texans. In addition, 40 top-10 performance bests have been set.
Tarleton State will have a week off before competing in the postseason. The Texans will head to Spokane, Wash. to compete in the WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Podium on Feb. 28 and March 1. Two weeks after that, the Purple and White will send individuals that qualify in the top 16 of each event in the nation to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Va. on March 14-15.
