STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State Track and Field has been breaking records all season and it didn't stop in the regular season finale weekend. The Texans set four new school records, a national record and added 15 new program bests at the Tyson Invitational and Jarvis Scott Invite on Friday and Saturday.
The Texans sent a small group to the Tyson Invitational with
Lokesh Sathyanathan and
Prestina Ochonogor setting school records. In addition, Sathyanathan also broke the Indian indoor long jump national record. A pair of school records also fell for the Purple and White at the Jarvis Scott Invite hosted by Texas Tech. Pole Vaulter
Jacob Thomas broke his school record for the third time this season. Freshman
Geron White broke the high jump school record on his first attempt at the record-breaking bar.
"Our performances at Arkansas and Texas Tech showed us that we are ready for the post season," said head coach Bobby Carter. "Competing against elite fields, breaking multiple school records, and continuing to raise the standard proves that our preparation is paying off. This momentum is real, our confidence is growing, and we are exactly where we need to be as we head into the conference championships. We're not just showing up, we're ready to compete."
Tyson Invitational
Lokesh Sathyanathan broke his own indoor school record with a best leap of 8.01 meters. Sathyanathan became the first Texan in program history to jump over eight meters in the indoor season. Not only did the senior post the best jump in Tarleton State history, but he also set the Indian National record. Sathyanathan became the first in India's history to leap over eight meters in the indoor season breaking the previous record of 7.97 meters. He placed eighth overall in the championship division and was fourth amongst the collegiate jumpers.
Prestina Ochonogor broke her school record as well at the Tyson Invitational. Ochonogor won the university section of the women's long jump with a best leap of 6.69 meters. Heading into this weekend, that would have been the second-best jump in the nation.
Stan Scott Invite
JayBrion Jones and
David Mvundura each qualified for the 60-meter semis running 6.77 seconds. Jones tied his season-best and Mvundura ran his career-best to tie Jones for the fourth fastest in school history. But Mvundura wasn't done just yet. Mvundura then broke his personal best in the semis to become the second fastest in program history, clocking in at 6.69 seconds to place 13
th overall. Jones ran 6.78 seconds in the finals.
Christian Simmons improved his second-best time in program history by 14 hundredths of a second. Simmons crossed in 1:52.41 to place 12
th overall. He then raced shortly after in the 400 meters and posted the seventh fastest time in program history crossing in 48.62 seconds.
MacKenzie Hill recorded a 5.88-meter long jump, fifth in program history. Hill placed fifth in the long jump.
In the women's 800 meters,
Victoria Guerrero ran the sixth fastest time in program history. In her 800-meter debut for the Texans she clocked in at 2:21.57.
Justice Armstrong and
Jamiyah Hill ran personal bests of 9.00 seconds in the 60 meters to tie for the eighth fastest time in program history.
Zoe Ray posted the ninth fastest 400-meter time crossing in program history in 57.50 seconds.
Day 2
Jacob Thomas broke his own school record for the third time this season. Thomas cleared the 5.19-meter bar to shatter his previous record of 5.05 meters. Thomas also claimed his second individual title of the season.
Freshman
Geron White broke the school record in his Texan debut in the high jump. White cleared the first two bars on his first attempt. He cleared 2.10 meters on his third and final attempt. On his first leap at 2.15 meters, he cleared and screamed in jubilation of breaking the program record
Davi Torres set in the season opener of 2.13 meters.
Mvundura started the day hot placing second overall in the 200 meters. He clocked in a personal best 21.15 seconds to improve his second-best time in school history.
Tayler Wessely also improved her personal best in the shot put by over a half a meter with a best throw of 13.91 meters.
Tyler Hedgepeth posted the sixth best time in the mile in program history. He placed ninth overall in 4:18.12. On the women's side,
Kaitlyn Gale crossed in 5:08.12 to also rank sixth in program history.
Justin Temple Jr. posted the sixth best men's triple jump in program history. His best leap of 14.10 meters came on his third and final attempt.
Tarleton State will have a week off before they embark for the WAC Championships at The Podium in Spokane, Wash. on Feb. 27-28.
