Tarleton State Track and Field heads to SMU Invitational for regular season finale

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State Track and Field is set to end their regular season for the second consecutive season at the SMU Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
 
The meet will kick off on Friday evening at 4 p.m. beginning with Sakina Umar Awam in the women's long jump. The Texans will also have two male and two females compete in the high jump on Friday evening as well. Tayler Wessely will round out the Friday night field events in the hammer throw. On the track on Friday night, the 200-meter sprinters will start the night off. The Texans will send five 200-meter sprinters on the women's side to compete. The final events on the track are the distance events with the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5000 meters. The Texans will have a pair of men and women in the steeplechase and Diego Flores will run the men's 500 meters to end the night.
 
The Texans are one of 10 Division I programs set to participate. The Purple and White will be joined by UT Arlington in the field as the only WAC teams. Also competing are: Arkansas Pine Bluff, Little Rock, Missouri State, North Dakota State, North Texas, SMU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTEP. Tarleton State swept the WAC weekly awards from this past weekend at the Michael Johnson Invitational. JayBrion Jones and Sir Jonathan Sims swept the men's track and field weekly awards. Jones ran the top five time in the region in the 100 meters clocking in at 10.10 seconds to win the event and set the school record. Sims turned in a pair of top two finishes in the long and triple jumps. He won the triple jump title while jumping a top 25 mark in the NCAA this season. On the women's side, Lauren Roy was tabbed track athlete, and Prestina Ochonogor was named the field athlete of the week. Roy posted the eighth fastest time in the NCAA West in the 100 meters in 11.08 seconds. Ochonogor placed second in the women's long jump with the sixth best mark in the NCAA West this year at 6.50 meters.
 
Last weekend at the Michael Johnson Invitational the Texans saw the women's 4x100 meter relay team break their own WAC All-time record in one of the first events on Saturday. Malak Rashwan broke the Egyptian all-conditions national record in both the prelims and finals of the 100-meter hurdles. In addition, Davi Torres was one of two Texans to win their event joining Sims.
 
Tarleton State Track and Field will have nearly two weeks to prepare for the 2026 WAC Track and Field Championships. For the second-straight year, the WAC Championships will be held at Mavericks Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The three-day meet starts on Thursday with a majority of day consisting of prelims on Thursday and Friday on the track and finals all day on Saturday.
